JTL SEO Plugin - The Speed Optimizer for the JTL Shop

We already explained in the last JTL episode how you can use the Redis Cache to improve the speed of your JTL store. In this episode, we’re going to take a look at a plugin that promises to cut your store’s load times in half. With the JTL Speed Optimizer plugin for the JTL store, long loading times are a thing of the past.

Comparison of loading times with and without JTL SEO plugin

You can see here in a progress-time diagram how long the page would take without the plugin to be completely built and on the other hand in what time it builds up with the JTL Speed Optimizer. With the plugin, 60% of the page is already visible after 2 seconds, whereas this value is reached only after 4.5 seconds without the plugin. Of course, this can vary from site to site, so here are three examples for comparison. The time from when the page starts to build up after the click and when the page build-up is completed were taken under the microscope. Especially on the details page, considerable results can be seen, whereby an almost 2.5-fold increase in speed can be seen. But what is the reason for this?

How the Speed Optimizer works

On the one hand at the CSS optimization. All style specifications are minified. Thus, when loading the page, it is limited only to the visible CSS elements, which means that less has to be loaded, which in turn is more efficient and reduces the loading time. However, in addition to CSS optimization, DNS prefetching also occurs, whereby the domain is resolved into its IP address before the content of the external domain is called, so there is no need to wait for the resolution first. This also saves time. Which in turn is also true for loading the images. Instead of having them all loaded directly, they are reloaded as needed, which is done with the Images Lazy Loader is achieved. This is because the images of a web page are traditionally loaded immediately with the loading of the page and therefore block the rendering of this page. Using lazy loading, the image URLs are hidden until the page is loaded – then the images are reloaded in the visible area. The other images are reloaded when scrolling to the respective image. JTL already works with LazyLoading for the product images in the standard template. However, images from own pages and in the further layout are not affected and can be retrofitted herewith.

But how is the plugin now integrated into the JTL store?

We have directly on the page of Knoell Marketing the opportunity to download the necessary file and test it for 14 days. In the JTL store itself you go under plugins in the plugin management. Under Upload you upload the zip file and should find the KM Speed Optimizer in the Available tab. Install it by checkingmark and clicking install. As you can see, this is now present and active and contains the best possible basic settings. However, if you want to make individualizations, they can be made in the basic settings. What the individual points mean and what the critical CSS is about, which you can create in the detail settings, will be explained in detail in the next episode.
