Mass import of articles with the ant

Creating individual articles via JTL-Wawi’s product management is relatively tedious and not exactly productive. It is therefore a huge task to create several hundred articles in this way in the merchandise management system and to keep them up to date. So there has to be a way to make this more effective and as much as possible automated.

Update: This post from 07/16/2013 was updated on 06/08/2023.

The developers of JTL-Wawi have also recognized this. Therefore, in order to automatically import and export large amounts of data to the database, you have developed and implemented the import and export interface JTL Ant. With the help of JTL Ant we can now export the first sample item to a CSV file. Copy & Paste this CSV file. Fill up with more items and import the finished import file again.

The JTL Ant is called via the menu item Start → JTL Ant

Export sample item

In this step we want to export the sample article. To do this, click on the JTL Export icon in the JTL ant.

It is important to note that the export field names do not always match the names in the JTL-Wawi forms. Therefore, check the individual fields carefully.

Now click on “Start export”. Select a location for the export file, leaving the file name as it is, and then click Save. After a short moment the export is finished and you can close the window by clicking Back. You can now close the JTL ant by clicking on the “X” in the upper right corner. There should now be a file on your hard drive named JTL-Export-Article Data-[Datum].csv.

Fill spreadsheet with articles

The input masks in JTL-Wawi are not really suitable for effectively creating articles in the merchandise management system. The use of a spreadsheet is far more effective here. You don’t necessarily need Excel for this either. The free open-source alternatives LibreOffice and OpenOffice are just as suitable for this.

We have added the 3 column headings Image 1, Image 2, Image 3 and Path to the file. Here we store the path information for the images to the products. The finished file can be found in the Course Documents directory.

Directory structure for importing images and media

When importing images via a CSV file, two things are helpful.

  • All images should be stored in a folder on the local hard disk of your computer
  • The image names correspond to the manufacturer article number (e.g. mc810-03.jpg)

Thus you only have to include the following function in Excel for the import =[Spalte Pfad] & [Spalte HAN] & “.jpg”. If you want to import more than one image per article you only need to change the extension to “-001.jpg” for each column and also rename the images accordingly.

Example: =$Q2&$R2&”-001.jpg” for the column Image 1

You can copy the path to your images from Explorer and paste it into your Excel spreadsheet.

The finished result in Excel then looks like this, for example:

You can then save the finished table with the extension *.csv on your hard disk. You can save the finished table with the extension *.csv on your hard disk.
