The last software release was a while ago. On the one hand quite nice, since I do not have to install a new software version every 14 days. On the other hand, I was a bit worried, because with every update, bugs or security holes were always corrected or closed. As always, there is no exact date for the next update. Nevertheless, here is a foretaste of the upcoming changes in the new JTL-Wawi version.

In the JTL-Software Forum Thomas Lisson has published an incomplete foretaste of what new features there will be in the 926 version. Based on my experience with the major release on 99860, I’m not going out on a limb here. However, some items in the list are so interesting that I would personally be happy to get a beta version to test these features.

Many bug fixes

My little conclusion:

From my point of view it would be nice if there would be a change management for JTL-Wawi. In my view, this would make it possible to plan changes and minimize risks. Classically, I would divide the JTL-Wawi updates into two categories. Updates that fix bugs or close security gaps (security updates) and updates that contain new or changed functions (feature updates). Security updates should be released promptly and regularly on specific dates. For feature updates, irregular intervals once or twice a year are quite sufficient. The separation makes sense for another reason. Whereas with function updates the database must also be adapted each time, security updates without database adaptations can be automatically distributed to the computers completely automatically without any major impairment of operation. For a single-user installation, this may not yet matter. On a network like I maintain, every update in the past also caused an interruption in service.

From the long list of changes and enhancements that many have been eagerly awaiting, I know that I will have to set up a second test environment with the new Wawi on my small network and probably wait for the first two three updates before I upgrade the production environment to the new version. Bottom line, like many on the forum, I’m already looking forward to the new version and can’t wait to install and test it for the first time.

Until then your Michael Schäfer
