JTL-Wawi 1.6 Set sales tax of shipping items

Positions with their own control logic

In this JTL-Wawi 1.6 tutorial you will learn how to define the sales tax of shipping items. Our goal is to assign a fixed tax rate to a shipping method so that it is not automatically determined by the highest position. Why this can make sense and how it works, you can see in the video.

The basic problem

As always, it should be stated in advance that this article is not intended to provide legal advice, but merely to inform. Indeed, for some merchants it is necessary to apply a fixed tax rate on shipping. What JTL-Wawi does by default, if this individual tax rate is not yet created, let’s have a look at it directly. We have once prepared an order here, in which on the one hand clothing was ordered with 19% and a book with 7%. If we were to specify a shipping method now, it would be based on the highest position. This is the case in 1.6, but was also the case in 1.5. Now, one problem could be that, for example. Foodstuffs in Switzerland are taxed at a lower rate than the rate to be paid for shipping. Accordingly, we would pay less tax than necessary. Therefore, it would be practical to generate a fixed tax rate that is virtually tied to a specific shipping method

JTL-Wawi 1.6 Set sales tax of shipping items - how to do it

This is exactly what the 1.6 makes possible. Let’s take a look at how the whole thing works. We first want to create a new tax class intended for this purpose. So let’s go to Admin > Taxes and Tax Classes. Click Create, name them and save. Then we go into the shipping methods. We now take for example DHL Paket and can choose their own tax class for this shipping method. For this we select our just created tax class “Shipping” and save again. Now just off to the tax administration. Here we define how high the tax rate is in the given zone. We therefore now have a notional tax rate of 5.3% for our example. Then we create this once for the EU zone, select our tax class shipping and now see a small bug that will probably be fixed until the final 1.6 version. Because we can enter a percentage tax rate, but we see it afterwards. So you don’t see that now, you just have to trust me that I’m typing 5.3 here, we’ll save and you’ll see that I didn’t fib to you. We do the same for the non-EU zones.

Finally, when we go back into our original order, delete the shipping line item and enter our adjusted shipping method, we see that our uniform tax rate is listed, so you can always be sure that a uniform tax rate is applied to the shipping.
