JTL Freelancer vs. JTL Agency – is what this video is all about. We take a closer look at the advantages of a 1-person service provider and compare them with the advantages of a JTL service partner agency. Where are the dangers, what should be considered in advance and which option is best for whom? All this in our screencast.
In today’s episode, we’re going to look at a very exciting topic, which is the juxtaposition of 1-person service providers and agencies. In the specific case JTL agencies or the JTL support vs. JTL service providers. Before we start to explore what is better, when and where the dangers lie, a little tip from our side, how you can clarify your concerns, questions or problems independently of an agency, support or service provider and even free of charge. This is made possible by the JTL Software User Community group on Facebook. With well over 4,000 members, which consists of merchants, JTL experts, but also JTL newbies, the probability is high that other merchants there have also already had a similar problem.
Why does a 1-man service provider seem attractive to companies in the first place? This is the case at least for small retailers. The advantages are the price and the probably better accessibility, as the service provider can simply and unproblematically act spontaneously on call, which makes the process more direct and less bureaucratic. But that’s already the first sticking point, because this concept only works for small projects with little budget. This means that the service provider can help you either only in JTL-Wawi issues, only in store issues, design issues or for product videos and photos. For one thing, he won’t be able to do it all at once, but even if he can, he can only work through it successively.
An agency works simultaneously. There is usually at least one specialist for each area. This means that the designer, developer and content creator sit down together, work out a concept together and then implement it in their area simultaneously. This means that for larger projects, the time aspect is a clear advantage for the agency. But where are the dangers now? A practical example of this is already attached in the word filter article with the same topic. There, it is an IT service provider that managed the IT infrastructure of law firms as a one-man operation. Accordingly, he also managed extremely important passwords. Now the Covid-19 wave we are all familiar with struck and unfortunately cost the service provider his life.
Which was not only a tragic incident for the relatives, but also a financial loss for the law firms. Because they could no longer get to the server, could not run updates, nor perform maintenance. Now this is a drastic example, as the entire IT was paralyzed here. Nevertheless, even small retailers can suffer considerable damage if only one person takes care of the important e-commerce issues. If this person really fails due to a death, passwords that only this person knows can lead to you not being able to access the Wawi or not being able to correct errors in the store. That means it takes time, effort, nerves and in the end money to fix the problem. Especially for small retailers, the latter in particular is not available in unlimited quantities.
Therefore, we can only refer to the Word Filter article, which contains a checklist of what you as a small retailer, if you work with one-man service providers, should consider in advance. In the best case, a concept is already presented here by the service provider itself, which includes substitution rules, shows clear documentation and gives you security that someone other than this person has access to the master password, should this person pass away. Furthermore, you should go through each case in advance and have an answer for what if…
Another danger for both parties is pseudo self-employment. If e.g. should the case apply that you need the all-round package, i.e. the Store, Wawi, pictures, videos, Design and SEO and one person can actually do it, then a lot of hours will accumulate, but these should not be worked off within half a year, but preferably as soon as possible.
This means that the freelancer or freelancer can no longer accept any further orders due to time constraints alone. For better communication, he then also no longer works from home, but in the customer’s office. Thus, it can happen faster than one would like that one slips into bogus self-employment. The facts of the case are fulfilled if the service provider is not free to determine his working hours, has to comply with the client’s instructions, has to provide performance reports and, best of all, does more customer acquisition for the client than for his own business. At this point, it should be noted that we do not provide legal advice and cannot assess how many of the applicable points are in fact fulfilled.
This must always be considered individually, but at least there is a risk here that is eliminated or no longer affects you with an agency. This is because both parties are prosecuted in the case of bogus self-employment. So what’s the bottom line. There are special cases of micro-dealers where the lower price and immediate accessibility probably play into their hands. But if it’s a larger project, you’ll have less stress in the end if you just hand the whole thing over to an agency. There are specialists for each area who are coordinated as a team and can work simultaneously, giving you an enormous time advantage.
Furthermore, you do not have to worry about a possible bogus self-employment and resulting reclaims from health insurance companies, the tax office or other official bodies. In addition to the agencies, there is also the JTL support, should it be a small JTL project, which provides you with a phone, callback and e-mail ticket support.
