Integrate and use Google Analytics in JTL Shop 5

How to link the JTL Shop 5 with Google

In this JTL software tutorial, we will show you how to connect a JTL Shop 5 with the Google Analytics account in order to track and ultimately analyze activities on your store pages.

Integrate Google Analytics in JTL Shop 5

Today we want to show you a solution how you can be more analytical as an online merchant, thereby making your online store more efficient, to sell more successfully in the end. These are big goals that are not mastered with a single set screw. But no progress without a beginning. That’s why today we will deal with the connection of Google Analytics with your online store using the practical example of JTL Shop 5.

Create Google Analytics account

First of all, you need to create a Google Analytics account. The primary requirement is to have a Google account.
If you don’t have one yet, you have to create one in advance, but we won’t show you how to do that in this video.
But to create the Analytics account, you can either enter“google analytics” at Google or access it directly with “analytics.google.com”. Then click on“Start measurement“. Give your account any name, leave the following boxes checked and click Next.
In this step you need to set the property name and specify the time zone and currency that apply to you.
In the next step, enter the information that applies to your company and click on create.
You will have to agree to the terms of use, so read them, check the boxes and agree.

Set up data stream in Google Analytics

Now you need to set up a new data stream, which is nothing more than a data source for the property. Since we want to link our online store, we click Web. Now the store URL of our JTl-Shop 5 can be entered here and this concrete stream can be given a name. Leave the optimized analysis enabled for you and finally create the stream. This means that the first hurdle has been overcome.
You will now see your individual measurement ID at the top right here, which you must remember.
If you are running a JTL store 4 and have come across this blog article, then we now put the link to our “JTL store 4 with Google Analytics connect” – blog article in which we explain how the further procedure of the Google Analytics link for the store 4 is.

Integrate Google Analytics in JTL Shop 4

For JTL Shop 5 owners, you can now go to the JTL Store or directly to the NETZdinge site. Here we need to download the Google Codes plugin for JTL Shop 5. If you’re interested in what the plugin does, check out our interview with Rene Kaltschmidt.
Otherwise you have the possibility to download the newest version in the plugin download tab. Once the download is complete, leave the file exactly as it is, i.e. do not unzip it, and go to the store backend.

Integrate Google Analytics in JTL Shop 5 - Upload the plugin

Here you have to go into the plugin manager and click on upload. Upload the NETZdinge file you just downloaded.
You will get a confirmation that your plugin has been successfully uploaded and you can now install it in the “Existing” tab.
That the installed plugin now shows up in the Problems section. is due to the test license. Enter“demo” as license key and save.
The Google Codes plugin is already displayed under “Activated” and can be configured in the settings.

Configuration of the NETZdinge plugin to be able to integrate Google Analytics in JTL-Shop 5

What this can do in detail will be explained in more detail in further episodes. Now we just want to show you the final setup of Google Analytics and in advance how to connect Google Search Console. To do this, you need to view the HTML tag, copy and paste it here. You can find this in the settings under Confirm ownership. Among the alternative confirmation methods you will find the HTML tag which you have to copy, paste here and delete everything before“content“. Among them are options for inserting the Google Sitlelink box, setting cookie policies and debugging.
More crucial for us, however, are the Google Analytics settings. Of course, the first checkmark must be set here so that Google Analytics is activated. You have just noted down the measurement ID. This must be inserted here. Since we want to maintain legal compliance, we leave this next settings to “Yes, everywhere” to provide the option to disable. However, we do not provide legal advice herewith. Therefore, any legal statements are without guarantee.

More configurations in the plugin

In the next step you can determine where the link should be placed, i.e. enter the CSS path. You can change the positioning by specifying whether the link should be placed before, after, or somewhere else.
You can specify below whether the status of the opt-in cookie should be displayed and whether a message should be displayed when deactivating or activating it. If data is to be collected anonymously, which would be recommended for data protection reasons, leave the field as it is.
Cookies can be disabled, but read the documentation very carefully so that you don’t make any data protection faux pas.
eCommerce data is transmitted to Google Analytics with the hook.
Finally, you can specify the data to be transmitted. So whether the goods total or the total sum is used.
The dwell time of a page visitor, if this checkmark is set in the corresponding field. The next field can be used to determine the time interval for measuring the dwell time. If the scrolling and reading speed is to be determined and transferred, the check mark must also be set here. Save at the end.
You can now do the test and click back and forth on your store for a while and then go into your Analytics account.
As you will see, this page visit was registered.
