Create PrestaShop in under 10 minutes

How to create your own PrestaShop

Create your own PrestaShop in under 10 minutes – Learn how in this PrestaShop tutorial. We will show you a tutorial on how to get started with PrestaShop without any previous experience

Create PrestaShop - The preparations

Last but not least, we conclude our video series “Create an online store in under 10 minutes” with the setup of the French store system PrestaShop. If you are more interested in Shopify, Shopware 6, the JTL Shop 5, Gambio or Magento, feel free to check out these blogs in advance.
In order not to lose any time, we also start directly with the preparations.
First of all, you need to download the installation files from the PrestaShop site, unzip them and upload them to your web server. Then, after you have created the database, you can enter the store URL in your browser and should find a loading bar.

Create PrestaShop - How to install the online store

After it fills up to 100%, you need to select a language for the installation wizard and click Next. In the next step, read through the license agreements, confirm and click Next.
In step 4 the installer needs your store data. So the name of the store, your contact details and a decision whether demo data should be installed. Feel free to deny that for yourself, we left it at yes for us once. When you are done, remember the e-mail address and password you entered, as we will need them to log in to the store. Then click Next.
Now your database data comes into play. Change the database address and enter the name, user and password.
If you want to be on the safe side, you can also check it again with the blue button. Then click Next.
Now your pay is done and you can wait until the store is finally installed, after which the successful installation will be confirmed. Now you can go to either the back-end or the front-end.

Create a new category and sub-category

We want to start directly with our customizations, so let’s go to the backend. As a little info beforehand. Before you can even log into the backend, the “Install” directory must be either renamed or deleted via FTP client. Once you have done that, enter your e-mail and password. Welcome to your new store backend.
Now, to be able to buy something in your store, you need a product that you organize in a category. So let’s start with the category. To do this, go to Catalog and Categories. To create a new one, click Add New Category in the upper right corner. Here you enter the name first of all. We want to create this as the main category, to which we will then create a subcategory called Sneakers in the next step. That is why we do not add the shoes category to any parent category. You can enter a desired description below it and, as in all other store systems, you have a full-fledged HTML editor with which you can work visually optimizing but also SEO optimizing. You can find out exactly how to do that in our PrestaShop SEO blog.
Otherwise, a category image can still be uploaded in the following, as well as the meta data can be integrated. This category should be visible for all, as it is set here by default, so save it. Now, if you want to assign a subcategory called Sneakers to your main Shoes category, go back to Add New Category and this time assign Shoes as the parent category. The rest remains the same.

Create PrestaShop - Create new test product

Now our categories are created, so we can create our test product under Articles by clicking on the blue button in the upper right corner as usual. First of all, fill in the name of the product. Then you can add a product image.
As you can see, the recommended size is 800 x 800, which you should keep for optimal display. Otherwise, compress the image in advance so that it is about 100 Kb or smaller. The filename should contain the focus keyword, for us for example. “sneaker-white” and be hyphenated. If your image meets these criteria, you can proceed and enter and assign the stock, price and desired category. For all other more specific settings like specifying a brand, adding a property and linking similar products, feel free to watch our detailed “Creating an item” video.
Finally, activate the article so that it is also displayed in the frontend and save it.

Assign category to header

Now there is one more crucial point to consider, so that we can successfully carry out our test order. In PrestaShop you have to manually assign the categories to the header. You would be able to find the article with the search mask, but the category would not be displayed in the header. To realize this, we go to our Module Manager under Modules. Enter“horizontal” as a search term here and the appropriate module for designing our navigation bar will be displayed. Click Settings here and find the category you want from the existing entries to add it to the left column. Then save again. By the way, you can get to the frontend by clicking on “Show my store” in the upper right corner.

Perform test order and view around backend

And lo and behold our category is played out. Open it, go to the product and promote it to the shopping cart. Then you go to the checkout and start the checkout process. Enter your customer data and confirm that you have read the privacy policy and the terms and conditions. Then enter the other data and select a shipping and payment method. This gives us the hint that PrestaShop has payment and shipping methods stored natively. The order ran successfully and can now be viewed in the backend. There you can view and edit our latest orders in the main Sales section under Orders.
This gives us the confirmation that our store is already working once.

Create PrestaShop - The Theme Editor

Next, let’s take a look at the Theme Editor, which can be found in the Design and Template and Logo section.
My personal opinion is that this displays the structure well, but is not as sophisticated as the OnPage Composer or the editor of the worlds of experience in Shopware 6. Under Template itself you can choose paid templates, integrate them directly and then customize them as I said under Template and Logo. To do this, go to the Page Configuration and here you can view the individual columns and also get a direct visualization of where they are located. We can edit the homepage, category pages and the product pages. If you now look at this structure here, i.e. the menu, the slider, the home products, then it corresponds 1:1 to the representation on the homepage. If we would simply deactivate the image slider, it would also disappear in the frontend, but what we want to achieve now is that our shoes category is displayed as a home products category. To do this, we go to Home Products, into the Highlights settings, and would now need to determine the category ID of our newly created category. For this back to the category Overview. You can see it here in the list view, you have to copy it and enter it in the highlight settings.
Off to the frontend and lo and behold, our newest product would now also be visible on the home page and would also be directly orderable.

Integrate legal texts in PrestaShop and play them out in the footer

So we have everything covered except for the legal texts. As usual, we would like to point out that we are not allowed to give legal advice and do not do so here, but merely inform you. But before that, the tip that we now link our PrestaShop Screencast Playlist here. If you want to learn more about any of the topics addressed in this video, the detail video is in this playlist or will be in the near future.
Also, we have already shot the detail video on how to generatethe privacy policy and integrateit into PrestaShop, but we will go through it again in this blog article in a fast forward. If you do not have any legal texts yet, Trusted Shops or the Händlerbund are your contacts. Once you have them ready, create a new page by clicking on Design and Pages. Here you can create a new page with the blue button in the upper right corner. Enter a headline, fill in the meta data if necessary and integrate the privacy policy or the legal text you are about to edit. It is important that this is displayed. On Google, Bing and Co. this does not necessarily have to be indexed. And save at the end. We want to place our privacy policy in the footer. You can also create a new link widget for this purpose, we want to have our legal texts displayed under companies. So now you go to the pencil icon behind“Company” and put a check mark next to Privacy Policy. If you save and go to the store frontend, you will find your legal text in the footer and you can view it by clicking on it. If you now do this step for all other necessary legal texts, nothing will stand in the way of your successful sale with your new PrestaShop.
