Create JTL Shop 5 in under 10 minutes

How to create your own online store

Create your own JTL Shop 5 store in under 10 minutes – Find out how in this JTL Shop tutorial. We will show you a tutorial on how to get started with the JTL store without any previous knowledge. Installation, create product, create category, operate OnPage Composer, enter legal texts and play them out in the frontend, as well as integrate shipping and payment methods. We explain all this in this video.

Create JTL Shop 5 - The preparations

We will now start with the installation. What to check beforehand, i.e. which system requirements should be met by your web server, can be found in our detailed JTL-Shop 5 installation blog, or checked with the test script on the JTL software page. If you have ensured that, either download the Community Free Edition or purchase the paid version from the JTL Store and download it from the Customer Center. After you have unzipped the files, uploaded them to your web server via FTP client and granted the necessary write permissions, open your browser and enter the store URL. Then you will find a white window and you have to press the“Click here” link at the very top to initiate the installation process.

Installation of the JTL Shop 5

We are satisfied with the German language, so we go on to step 1. So far all is well, because the fact that the displayed configuration file cannot be found is a good sign and necessary. If you have an SSL certificate, you can simply go to “Continue with step 2”. We do not have this for our test store, so we say we want to proceed anyway and then click the blue button. The necessary write permissions are available, so let’s go to the system check. As far as we are concerned, everything is in the green. If something is displayed in yellow for you, contact the JTL experts at eBakery and we will help you with the setup process of your JTL store.
We now proceed to step 4, where we need to enter the database name, user name and the corresponding password. We decide to install the demo data. Feel free to leave that out for yourself. However, to make sure that everything has been entered correctly, click on Check data. We continue and in the next step we need to note down the four values, as they are important and necessary to log in to the JTL Shop 5 backend.
Then click the blue button one last time and the SQL schema will be imported, which may take a moment.
This connects the installation.

How to create and set up your JTL Shop 5

In the URL line of your browser, enter the store URL with“/admin” after it and log in with the username and password you just noted. This will start the setup wizard.
Enter the name of your store, your UST ID if applicable, determine if your business is B2B or B2C and continue.
In the next step, enter your e-mail address, your name and an e-mail address that can be used as a reactivation e-mail in case you lose your password. In step 3 and 4 you can select legal text provider and payment service provider respectively, but we will skip this for now. Now you can look at the entered data again in this overview and confirm it.
With this a JTL store 5 is installed and halfway basic configured. But to create categories, articles and other things, we need to connect the JTL store with the Wawi. You can find detailed instructions on how to do this on our blog.

Connect JTL Shop 5 with JTL-Wawi

We’re just going to fast forward through this for the video. In JTL-Wawi, go to the Online Shop tab, click on Online Shop Connection and click onCreate. The license key, a name for the online store, the store URL, as well as the user name and the password must be entered here.
To establish a connection between Wawi and the store, go to the Customer Center.
Under Products, Online Shop and Shop Editions you can create a license or link an existing one to your store by simply entering your store URL. After that you need the license key shown here. To get the username and password, go to the JTL-Shop 5 in the Administration on Users & Rights and select Match JTL-Wawi. Copy this data, go back to the Wawi and enter all the data. After that click on Test connection.
You can now select the preferred currency, language and assigned customer group and continue with Ok.
Thus, the two are interconnected.

Create JTL Shop 5 - Create category and article

In order to integrate data from the Wawi into the JTL store, an alignment would be necessary, but I will first show you how to create a new category and a test article. You do this by clicking on Create Category, giving it a name and enabling it for the online store we just connected. In addition, you can enter any description and, for example. store a category picture.
The category creation is finished, now you can create a new article. Matching our already existing product we create now times a white sneaker as an article. To do this, click on Create article. You can enter the name here, so in our case now times “Sneaker white”, must release it for the online store, so that this is played there. In order to earn something, the whole thing must also get a price, which you can enter below. If you want to set prices separately for each platform, you can do so in the field below. In addition, a short description and main description can still be created, which can be designed as in the two blogs(Shopify and Shopware 6) before visually but also SEO. Now we want to add one more image for this tutorial. We click Add in the Images tab and select our desired image. In our case, SEO suitability was not taken into account, because the image is still too large. So make sure that the image is compressed to around 100kb, you put your focus keyword in the file name and hyphenate it like in our example in the video. Then save.

Perform online store comparison

To these two articles in the category“Test category Sneakeria“. to transfer, we need to start a store match. To know what you have transferred, display the summary by checking the box and then clicking “Start”.
Both were transferred with it and can be found in the frontend.
We’re going to do a test order now. As you will see in the second step of the checkout process, one shipping method and two payment methods are already stored by default. Select one of them at a time and click“Next“. And order. Now back to the Wawi.

Payment and shipping service provider in JTL Shop 5

When reconciling, you notice that an order has been transferred. With this we can assume that our JTL Shop 5 online store works.
I’ll show you where you can add a shipping provider if needed. To do this, go to Shipping, Shipping types in the Administration and create a new shipping type here.
Payment service providers can be managed under“Payment types“.
However, the creation is a bit more complicated. Therefore, we have already written a detailed tutorial for you in a separate video on how to create payment service providers in JTL Shop 5 using PayPal.

Create JTL Shop 5 - The legal texts

With this, we are only missing the legal texts. Unfortunately, we are not allowed to give legal advice on this, but only to inform you where you can generate them and how to include them. The Händlerbund or Trusted Shops are two possible places to go to have legally compliant store texts created. Meanwhile, there are also interfaces that can be integrated as a plugin in the JTL store 5. Feel free to take a look around the JTL store. Otherwise, these can also be integrated manually by going to Own content and pages. The practical thing about JTL is that these are already completely available as a pattern. So go to Legal Information for that. You can use the edit icon to change the privacy policy, the terms and conditions or the imprint.
In the content section, the generated imprint can then be inserted via copy and paste. Then save.
The good thing is that you don’t have to link or create these pages individually with the footer. These are inherently present, which we can now check once. Here is our imprint, which also contains our change.

The OnPage Composer

Last but not least, I would like to show you what was the Theme Editor for Shopify or the Erlebniswelten Editor for Shopware 6 for the JTL Shop 5.
You can reach the editor called OnPage Composer in the backend by clicking on the eye here and opening it with the OnPage Composer icon. But the editor can also be controlled from the frontend and applied to any page.
It works similar to Shopify or Shopware. The division into content and layout is slightly different, with content being more the media, such as images, videos, text, and layout being the shape, such as containers, grid layout, or tabs.
You can simply drag and drop them in and then, for example, click on a file. fill the grid layout with media like an image or video from the content sections. Afterwards a window opens where you can make more detailed adjustments for these so-called portlets. For that, it actually makes the most sense to look at the detailed blog on OnPage Composer, as we explained that in great detail.
