Create Shopify store in 12 minutes

How to create your own online store

Create your own Shopify store in 12 minutes – Learn how in this Shopify tutorial. We’ll show you a guide on how to get started on Shopify in 2021 with no prior experience.

Create Shopify Shop - Here's how

The good thing about Shopify is that you don’t have to worry about hosting, as it’s a cloud-based commerce platform. That means you simply go to the shopify.com site in your browser.
Here you enter your e-mail address, click on “Start now” and enter your desired password in the second step.
In the lowest field, you determine the name of your store and also get direct feedback whether this name is still available. If you have found a suitable name that is not yet in use, click on “Create your own store”.Now your Shopify store will be created, so wait a moment. The next step is to give Shopify the necessary information, whether you are already a merchant, what your current turnover is then, in what industry you want to sell and whether you are going to work on your own or as a designer, for example, for a customer. We are still inexperienced and want to open a sneaker online store in our example. That’s why we enter the information accordingly. When you are done, click on “Next”.
Here you enter your contact details or your business address, which will be used by default.
However, you can safely change them afterwards. This was the last step of the registration. With a click on the green button, you will get to your store and can start.

Shopify Price Plans

As you will see there, you are in the testing phase as of now. This is also completely sufficient to set up the store completely for the time being. Then, when you really want to get started, you can choose one of the three plans. Then, in addition to that, there are the Shopify Plus plans.
We have already written a blog article on the normal Shopify pricing plans as well. Otherwise, the Basic Plan would be sufficient for the beginning.

Create Shopify Shop - How to get to the frontend

You are now in the backend of the store, where all settings and adjustments are made. However, what the customer then gets to see is the frontend. To view this, you just need to click on the eye next to your online store. That means if you have made any changes in the backend and want to take a look at them, you can always just go here and inspect the changes. What you will see there is the default theme of Shopify. A theme virtually defines what kind of media, i.e. whether images, texts, videos, sliders or the like are positioned at which places. In our case, we have a full-width sample image with text on it. Below also a picture with the text but is next to it. Again below, three images in tile arrangement with text below the images. Then your categories would be presented and testimonials at the end.
So the theme is the basic structure of your store page. This can of course be changed at any time, so you can build your own theme from it. But the advantage of finding a theme that is perfect for you is the time you save.

Shopify Theme Editor

We want to take a look at the editor for this, so let’s go back to the backend.
If you click on the online store as sales channel there, you are directly in the theme settings.
The default theme of Shopify is called“Debut” and can be renamed, duplicated or downloaded from this menu. Furthermore, the code can be changed, which may be necessary, for example, if you want to change the code. want to connect the Shopify store with Google to display your listing in the Google Shopping feed. But we don’t want to do any of those things now, we want to customize the theme, which redirects us to the editor.

Shopify Shop Create - The Theme Editor Explained in Detail

The good thing is that this one is super simple and self-explanatory. You have in the middle, the view that we could also just see in the store frontend. This means that every change you make is also displayed here in real time.
The changes can be made in the left column. The practical thing is that the order in the column is the same as the view in the main field.
You can then make any changes within these blocks.
Whether the logo should be on the left or in the center, for example. You can then select the image you want or choose free stock images directly from the Shopify Library. This is pointless for the logo, of course, but can make sense for transitional images.
You can set the logo width, enter a specific announcement above the header and of course integrate your CI colors. Depending on the module, there are different setting options. We also find in Stock Gallery matching images for our theme “Sneaker”. You can adapt the appropriate text below and see that it is also changed directly live in the main window. If you now say you like the layout so far, but something specific is missing, you can go to the end and add a new section. An example can be a song show, in which you can then pack different images and set them to auto-rotate.

Customize positions in the Theme Editor

This will directly make your online store look more valuable. If you now say you like the slider but not quite the position, you can simply move this module to the left of the list. Now the position is better in our case, but two picture elements among themselves bite each other. Therefore you can go to the photo underneath and delete it in the context menu. And already it fits.
We won’t discuss every single module now, but I think you got an impression how to change things. This means that in the end only your creativity limits you.

Shopify Shop Create Products

What we can’t enter yet are the products. That’s why we want to create some now. You can find them in the upper area, click on them and add a new product.
As a title we now take “Sneaker ‘Destructor’ in white”.
Then enter a suitable description in which your keywords should be placed. If you don’t know what Shopify SEO is all about yet, this related page is linked here. The good thing here is that there is a fully comprehensive editor. This means that you can implement both visually necessary and SEO-optimizing measures without having to know HTML. What this involves is embedding product videos.

Shopify Search Engine Optimization

To avoid slowing down your pagespeed unnecessarily, you should upload these videos to YouTube and then embed them via iframe.
Now you can add more product details. In our case, we are talking about sneakers and we ourselves are the provider. We have not yet created a category, so we cannot assign the product to one. But we can enter tags that match our product.
Of course, product images must not be missing. Here again I refer to make these SEO suitable.
So compress, hyphenate filenames with focus keyword and integrate alt text afterwards.

Since you are not going to be a charity, but probably a commercial enterprise, the product must also have a price that you can put under it. To demonstrate that this has been reduced, you can enter a reference price next to it. You can enter identification parameters such as the SKU or also known as the item number here and of course you must also specify the stock – that is, what quantity of this product is still available. Conveniently, you can also allow overselling, that is, selling products that you no longer have in stock.

Consider meta data when creating products in Shopify

At the end you can optimize the meta data of this product page to be found on Google, Bing and Co. as well. For this I refer again to our SEO video. Now just save. In the end, don’t forget to make this product live as well, since it’s designed to be a draft from the ground up.

Integrate products in theme

Now that we’ve created our first product, I’ll show you how to integrate it in the Theme Editor, where we’ve just been. We now have no categories yet but a product. That’s why we delete featured categories from default theme and integrate“featured products“. The amazing thing is that you can now buy the product without having to set anything up much beforehand.
Clicking on“Buy now” will initiate the checkout process. Since we are in the editor, you can also edit it. That means in the upper left corner you can switch between the pages.
If we now look at our checklist in the dashboard, there are only two items missing. How to integrate a domain or already your domain is self-explanatory. You go to“Add domain” and you can either buy a new domain or join an existing one.

Create Shopify Shop - Generate legal texts

Finally, only the legal texts are missing.
At this point, we cannot and must not provide any binding legal information. However, you can read through the Shopify Guide to get an idea of that, for example. an imprint or a privacy policy must not be missing in any store. You can see how to create and add them in our detailed Shopify legal texts blog. As a brief summary, however, here it is again.

Integrate the legal texts in your Shopify store

You can generate legal texts for the online store with Trusted Shops or the Händlerbund. Once you have this ready, go to the settings on Legal. Here you have the possibility to insert the respective legal texts. Make sure that links are also recognizable as links and are actually clickable. If this is the case, save.
But this does not mean that the legal texts have been played out in the frontend. For this you have to go to the navigation and adjust the footer menu. You add a menu item, give it the appropriate name, select legal texts there and assign them, for example, to a file. the imprint the correct option. Then click on add.
This should also provide the legal texts, or in our case only the imprint.
At this point again – we do not give legal advice. Play it safe and have a lawyer review your store before going live.
But then you have survived the basic setup of your Shopify store and are ready for your first purchases.
