JTL Shop vs. Magento

German store system or American online store

We take a closer look at JTL-Shop vs. Magento in this online store comparison video. What are the advantages, but also the disadvantages of JTL Shop 5 and Magento 2, you will learn in this online store tutorial.

JTL-Shop vs. Magento - Two store systems in comparison

In this episode, we once again perform a comparison – We contrast a German store system with an American store system. Meant are JTL Shop 5 and Magento 2. We already had a few words to say about Magento. A self-hosted store system launched in 2008. It probably has the larger market share compared to the JTL store system and a worldwide community that is around 250,000 strong. JTL-Software, on the other hand, enjoys a smaller, but German-speaking community that is very strongly linked to the company. Find out why in our 1 hour in-depth interview with Thomas Lisson, one of the two founders.

JTL knows how to shine with a strong community

There is the JTL Forum, the official JTL Facebook group, the unofficial JTL User Community group, the over 300 JTL Service Partners. So if something goes wrong, you will definitely get help. And if the standard functions are not enough, both systems offer the possibility to extend their system with plugins. Both about the same number. Both store systems are also convincing in terms of price – which means that neither has the edge. As you already know Magento is free in the basic edition. It looks the same for JTL Shop 5. If you do not place more than 500 items, the store is also free for the beginning. By the way, you can find out how to install and set it up in our JTL-Shop playlist. Now we come to the small weaknesses or limitations of both systems.

JTL store vs. Magento - complexity of Magento

Let’s start with Magento. My own personal feeling, since I have already worked with both systems, is that Magento takes longer to get used to. It also needs a very performant system, otherwise it can fall on your feet or not work in the worst case. Furthermore, you have to dig deep into your pockets if you want to realize special solutions.

Without JTL-Wawi no JTL-Shop

What is often criticized about JTL-Shop in comparisons is the dependency on the Wawi. In order to be able to create products, categories and other, JTL-Shop 5 must first be linked to JTL-Wawi. However, if you are already using Wawi to implement your multichannel strategy and are already using it on other marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, Etsy, Kaufland or OTTO Market active, then the jump is no longer large anyway. On the contrary, you already have your products in JTL-Wawi and can transfer them directly. Therefore, this supposed weakness is put into perspective. Speaking of which, Magento also offers marketplace connections via plugins, such as. Magnalister. Especially with the new 5er version it is easy to build and design modern looking store pages with OnPage Composer.

JTL Shop vs. Magento - A conclusion

I have found this to be rather more difficult in Magento. For this, Magento is #1 in terms of scalability. So what can be summarized now?
Once you have connected JTL store and Wawi, the rest is easy to use and set up. This means that you only need to consult an agency in individual cases or for individual solutions. With Magneto, things look a little different. Here, projects are often not approached without developers because of the complexity. At JTL you will be helped everywhere, whether in the forum or the Facebook groups and the whole thing natively in German. The good thing is that you don’t have to buy one or the other like a cat in a bag. Both are free to test or even use live. Therefore, familiarize yourselves with the system, go into yourselves again.

JTL-Shop vs. Magento - Both store systems can be tested free of charge

If you are just starting out and don’t have complex product variants, JTL-Shop might be something for you. Do you sell internationally anyway and plan to scale strongly in the near future, have complex product variants and just want to use your online store as a sales space – so don’t aim for a multichannel strategy. Then why not try out Magento?
