Create your own Magento 2 store in under 10 minutes – Learn how in this Magento 2 tutorial. We’ll show you a guide on how to get started with Magento without any prior knowledge.
Now that the first 4 store systems have been created by us, we will move on to the Adobe store system Magento 2. We will show you how to get Magento up and running in less than 10 minutes, so you can sell your items online.
To be able to start the installation, you must first decide on an installation variant.
You can choose between the Composer, the installation via Git or by downloading Magento as a zip file and unpacking it on the web server.
We opted for the latter and completed. If this is also the case for you, open your store URL in the browser and then you should also find this window here.
Click Agree and Setup and in the next step start the Readiness Test to verify that your system or the system of the web server is suitable for Magento. If everything is in the green area, click Next.
In this step, the Database User Name, Database Name and Password must be entered, which we will do once now.
In step 3 you can make changes to your domain or the admin domain for the backend. When you are satisfied, click Next again. Customize your Store – as it is called here – already requires an individualization. So you need to specify the appropriate language, currency and time zone for your store. In the penultimate step, before the store is finally installed, you have to create a username and password yourself, with which you will be able to log in to the backend in the future. In addition, integrate an e-mail. At the end click on Install and wait.
With this, your Magento 2 store is installed for now and you can view the relevant data again here. So that you don’t forget them, it is a good idea to take a screenshot of them at this point.
Otherwise, “Launch Magento Admin” will take you to the login for the admin area. Here you enter the username and password you just created.
Welcome to the backend of your new Magento 2 store.
Now that we have completed the installation, let’s first of all create a category and a test article.
Therefore, we now go to Products in the left column and first to Categories.
There we click on the root category under which you then create subcategories.
We have created subcategory Shoes and sub-subcategory Sneakers under it.
It is important to note that both are activated and the switch for “Include in Menu” is set to Yes, otherwise you will not see them in the frontend. You would then enter the name in the field below. In the content section you can add a description and also have here as in all other store system before a full-fledged HTML editor with which you can make Magento SEO technical but also visual changes. All other settings are now irrelevant for the visualization in the frontend for the time being. If you want to learn more about what to consider when creating a category, feel free to check out our “Creating a Magento 2 Category” blog. At the end, do not forget to save. Now we go afterwards again to the Products, But on Catalog.
Here we can add a simple product in the top right corner by going directly to Add Product. However, if you rather want to create a bundle product, you need to go to the arrow and select the desired product type. It is also important that this product is activated, otherwise it cannot be ordered in the frontend. Attributes must have been created previously to be able to select them here. We have given the product a name, which has automatically filled in the SKU. Of course, this can also be modified. A price must be included and the stock. Accordingly, we still have some in stock. We have assigned the product to our Sneakers sub-sub-category. Now it is called save at the end. You can read more about the other settings options in our detailed article on the blog.
The only thing we have added here is the picture. As usual, this is not search engine optimized. What it means to work search engine optimized in Magento 2, you will learn in our Magento SEO video.
To be on the safe side and make sure that our test order doesn’t go to waste right away, let’s check the shipping and payment methods. To set them, go to Stores and Configuration. In the sub-item Sales you have both the Payment Methods and the Shipping Methods. Flat Rate is activated for us, we want to do the same for Free Shipping. To do this, you need to uncheck the Use System valueand adjust this shipping method. As always, save at the end. For payment providers, some are also already available by default. One method is the referral.
By the way, you can get to the frontend by going to your profile in the upper right corner and clicking on Custom View.
What you will notice now is that your frontend will look different from ours. Let’s take another quick look at why this is the case in the backend. We went for content and design configuration in advance and chose Magento Blank theme for our Main website. You will most likely have No Theme integrated. This activated one of the default themes. Back to the front end. You should now also be able to see on your end that the categories have been successfully created and also the article is now available. Before we put it into the shopping cart, we register as a customer. Then off to checkout. Both shipping methods are also played out. Automatically we select the payment by bank transfer and we can place our order. Whether this is also present in the backend, which would then in turn mean that our store works, we will now take a look.
For this we go to Sales and Orders. And lo and behold, our order has been received and can be processed. The next step would be to further customize the theme, but this is not as easy to do with Magento 2 as it is with Shopware 6, JTL-Shop 5 or Shopify. You don’t have directly an editor like in the worlds of experience or something like the OnPage Composer or Theme Editor. That is, either you have web development skills from home or look on sites like Envato Market to find the right theme for you for a fee. This can be found under Content and Themes and can be customized under Configuration. With our current theme, we have limited options.
We can change the favicon, integrate the logo in the header or replace the copyright signature in the footer. But there is no modular system àla WordPress.
Last but not least, we have the legal texts that need to be embedded. For a detailed description of how to do this and how to generate them at Trusted Shops, you can read our “Magento 2 rights texts” blog here.
However, we are not allowed to give you legal advice with the blog, nor with this one, and we don’t do that, we just inform.
Let us now go through this as an example for the imprint. First of all, you need to go to Content and Pages for this. We will create a new page, which we call imprint, where you now have to insert your generated imprint. By the way, you can create or have created your legal texts at the Händlerbund or Trusted Shops. Once you have inserted them, you need to save them. In the subitem Blocks already exists our Footer Block. This can be created with Add New Block. Then you name it as indicated here. Finally, you need to create a widget.
It is important to create this as a CMS Static Block. Give the widget a name, have it play out for all Store Views and link this widget to your Footer Block. Save at the end.
For a more detailed execution, you are also welcome to watch the matching Magento 2 video. If you have now completed this for all necessary legal texts, nothing should stand in the way of successful selling.
So you have a working Magento 2 store, which is hopefully also legally compliant after you have inserted the texts and had the whole thing legally checked. If a topic was not covered in this video, either check out our Magento Playlist or schedule an appointment with our Magento experts.
