What hardware you need to run the JTL ERP on your PC or Mac, you will learn in this video from ecomDATA CEO Andreas Bezuh. Learn more about servers, raid (“redundant arrangement of independent hard disks”), processors and memory for JTL-Wawi.

Basics

A RAID system is used to organize multiple hard drives into a logical drive that allows for greater resilience or data throughput than a single physical storage medium.

What is a RAID system?

You are using JTL and its merchandise management and want to know which hardware is most suitable for it? Normally, the database is installed on a server and JTL-Wawi runs on a client. Approximately 4 GB of RAM, 2 cores and 10 GB of SSD space for MSSQL are recommended for the server. Wondering what you need a RAID system for as an online retailer with your server? A RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) system is used to organize multiple hard disks into one logical drive. This allows for greater resilience or data throughput than a single physical storage medium. Thus, a RAID system serves as a backup.

RAID 1

So, for example, if you have 2 hard drives, they will be mirrored with RAID. There are different RAID levels, it always depends on how many hard disks you need and have installed. From RAID1 you can assume additional security. If a hard disk fails, the data is not lost. With Raid 1, the data is mirrored, with higher RAID systems there are more complex variants. In summary, this means: RAID1 consists of two hard disks that are mirrored. If you write something into a database, it will be written to both hard disks at the same time. If one hard disk fails in the process, no data is lost because the data is also on the other hard disk due to mirroring.

RAID5 and RAID10

RAID5 usually consists of three or more hard disks, but usually five. However, this does not mirror five hard disks. Instead, the RAID system knows what data is present and distributes it across four hard drives. A disk is set as parity. If one of these hard disks fails, the system can restore the data. RAID10 can be seen as an extended RAID1. Or better than a mixture between RAID0 and RAID1. Because here you have the data striping and the mirroring. Striping is where you split data between multiple disks and mirroring is where you mirror. So you get the advantage of redundancy and speed increase. Even though RAID10 is a hybrid of RAID1 and RAID0, you should never use RAID0 for production systems because it does not create redundancy on its own.

The right processor

Besides the hard disks, it is also important to choose the right processor. After all, there are extra processors for servers. These so-called Xeon processors are the only ones that support ECC RAM. If you use a normal RAM, it can happen that data from the server is not processed correctly, because an error happens in the RAM. Since the error happens in RAM, the computer does not even notice that this error has happened. For example, a corrupt database may result. With ECC RAM, it is the case that the RAM itself checks and thus does not allow a faulty file to be saved.

The working memory is also important

The working memory is also important, because there are differences here as well. The main memory generally stores the database, or any applications you work with. If you start an application, it is loaded into the RAM and is also operated from here. If you don’t have enough memory, the system has to take the application and move it to a hard disk. This would slow down your system significantly. Therefore, you should always provide enough RAM in the server, especially when it comes to memory-intensive applications. If you have a standard server in a JTL database, the SQL server tries to load as much data as possible into RAM. JTL-Wawi does this quite fast. If it is now necessary to save to the hard disk, it is also necessary to search on the hard disk again. Your hard disk is many times slower than the RAM.
