MS SQL Express or Standard?

Which MS SQL license do you need for your JTL-Wawi database? Andreas Bezuh from ecomDATA explains the differences and gives valuable tips about which license is most suitable for your company.

The Microsoft SQL Server Express is a version of the SQL Server relational database management system that can be downloaded, distributed and used free of charge. It includes a database specifically designed for embedded and small applications.

Differences between MS SQL Express and MS SQL Standard

What are the differences between MS SQL Express and MS SQL Standard? And which license do you need for your JTL-Wawi database? First and foremost, Express is a free variant of Microsoft’s SQL Server and has certain limitations. Free variants are particularly suitable for beginners. Because especially in the beginning it is important to get familiar with a program first and also to save costs. The standard variant is the paid license. This extends the functionality of SQL Server and removes the limitations.

MS SQL Express

The limitations of MS SQL Express affect the database size as well as the RAM size. The database storage space must not exceed 10 GB. So it is not possible to add more articles to the database once you have reached the 10 GB. If you try to do so, the database may be damaged. When it comes to RAM usage, SQL Server cannot exceed 2 GB for caching data. The third limitation is the restriction of the processors. This means exactly: A SQL Server Express may only use a maximum of one processor and four cores.

Optimization possibilities are possible

After you have installed the JTL-Wawi database, you can choose between three different disks in the installation directory. It always depends on which system you use. If you do not have a fast system in the background, it is not absolutely necessary. If you do reach your limits, for example because your product range is so large, you can always look for further optimization options. For example, splitting it across three different SSD hard drives. For example, if a merchant has four hard drives, what is the best way to configure the JTL-Wawi database? The first thing you need to ask yourself is whether you want to work with a RAID array. In such a case, RAID 10 is required, which means that you will only have one of these 4 hard disks available for writing in the end.

Server hardware is a good solution

RAID10 provides protection in the event of data failure on one hard drive, so that the data on the other hard drives is still available. But which server is optimal for a user of JTL now? If you want to put everything together yourself, real server hardware is best. A cheap and fast option is not always the better option. For example, you take ECC RAM and a server motherboard. To guarantee the highest possible security for your data and important business processes, server hardware is very well suited.

SQL Standard is almost infinitely scalable

For customers with MS SQL Express and few sales transactions, a RAID10 array with 4 SSDs divided into two partitions is usually sufficient. One partition for the operating system, one for the SQL Server. So if you decide to use SQL Express, four hard disks are perfectly sufficient. If you use SQL Standard, it is possible to make everything a bit bigger. In fact, this is an almost infinitely scalable version. Thus, users with several 100000 items and many sales transactions can think about splitting the data to several RAID arrays. Z. B. :

  • Operating system/ MS SQL Server insatallation data
  • Database (.mdf file)
  • Log of the database (.log file)
  • Temporary data (tempdb)

In the end, it always comes down to how much space you actually need and how much you want to scale and how fast. As long as you use SSDs and build a good system, spreading it across multiple RAID arrays is not necessary to be successful. Server configurations are always individual – just like the business of every online retailer.
