JTL Shop vs. Shopify

The store system comparison

Which store system could be better for you? JTL Shop or Shopify? We have drawn up a comparison here. This is not an evaluation of whether one system is better than the other. Both do their job very well and differ rather in the details. You can read about them here.

JTL Shop vs. Shopify database

Shopify has its own database where all operations are stored – including all item data. This data is secured in the Shopify cloud.

JTL Shop has
JTL-Wawi
as a basis and not its own database. On the one hand, this has the advantage that no different article inventories can appear, on the other hand, much more can be mapped via the free ERP system. When orders are placed, a shipping label can be automatically printed in the warehouse, plus a packing slip that allows an employee to retrieve all goods from the warehouse, and much more.

There is even a complete Warehouse Management System (
JTL-WMS
) included free of charge, which can be operated via an app.

Shopify can also be connected to JTL-Wawi, but it needs an extra connector, i.e. an interface that transfers the data. Since Shopify has its own database, there may be some problems.

With this constellation, it must also be clear which system is the data master. If one employee works with JTL-Wawi and another one changes stocks or similar in Shopify, the stocks are no longer correct. You should therefore always work with only one system.

JTL Shop vs. Shopify customizations

With JTL-Shop, everything can be customized in principle, since access to the data is always possible here. Even when hosting via JTL software, you can request corresponding access data. This makes designs much easier to customize than with Shopify. Even completely new templates can be created and incorporated very easily.

You are just as flexible with plugins. If an existing plugin needs to be customized, our programmers can easily access and customize the files.

With Shopify, all files are in the cloud and cannot be customized separately. There are some CSS settings available for the design, but they are not as flexible as in JTL-Shop.

The big plus here, the other way around, is that all plugins, which Shopify calls apps, are tested before they are released. Untested apps are not available for installation.

JTL Shop vs. Shopify costs

The costs for Shopify are clearly regulated. From $29/month you can start with a full-featured store system, incl. Domain, server, SSL certificate, 24/7 service and a few good payment methods. Everything is ready to go right from the start.

The larger packages include more employee accounts and more detailed statistics and end (for regular stores) at $299/month. Enterprise stores run on the Shopify Plus system. We have more on this in our article What is Shopify Plus? compiled.

With JTL-Shop a “free” start is possible, or then only the server costs are incurred. You have the choice between your own hosting or hosting with JTL software. With JTL software, hosting starts at 14,99€/month, in this case the community free version is used. This version is free, so the 14,99€ are pure IT costs. For this, the online store is limited to a maximum of 500 items.

If you need more, the prices range from €449 to €3,999 one-time, or €49.99/month for the standard version. Hosting is offered only for the Community Free and Standard editions. The larger stores also need their own hosting, which we will gladly take care of for you.
