Create article in Shopware 6

To create a new article

Create your first article in Shopware 6 – that’s what this tutorial episode is about. We explain to you what is important when creating a new product in Shopware, which details are mandatory and what you must pay attention to if your article is to be displayed in the frontend.

How to create a Shopware 6 article

To create a new Shopware 6 article we start in the administration area and go to the menu item Catalogs in the left column and select our products. With the blue button you have the possibility to create a new product. If you want to edit or delete already existing items, you can click on the three dots of the respective product and perform the desired action.
Here you can see the customization mask where you can enter the title, description and all other parameters. We will now go through this piece by piece.
There is a possibility to migrate your running Shopware 5 store, but this is only possible with a software wizard in an elaborate process.

Here you can see which fields are mandatory to fill in

The title is of course essential, which is why it is marked with an asterisk. There should also be a description. The product number of your Shopware 6 article is automatically generated by Shopware, but can be changed as desired. Furthermore, a manufacturer of this product can be selected if it has been created before. If this is not yet available, it can be created in the menu item Catalogs under Manufacturers. Whether this should be switched directly active and e.g. should be highlighted in your storefront, this can be set with the buttons below.

Setting the pricing when creating your Shopware 6 item

The pricing can be edited in the next groupbox. That means you can choose between your tax rates, you can enter the gross price and automatically get the net price displayed if the lock icon is“locked“. Last but not least, the purchase price can be entered. In the box below, the stock level can be entered and the sale can be activated or deactivated, i.e. that an order for this product is no longer possible when the stock level is 0. In addition, a delivery time can be specified, a replenishment time specified in days and individually decided whether the item will be shipped free of shipping costs or not. Finally, a minimum and maximum purchase quantity can be defined, as well as a sliding scale can be entered while creating your new Shopware 6 item.

Before you create the Shopware 6 article, compress your images

In order for the product to be found by the site visitor, it should be assigned to the correct category. Below that, you can set the visibility for different sales channels. For the media upload, the classic rules apply that you’ve probably heard in our videos before. Name the file after your main keyword in hyphenated case and do yourself and your PageSpeed a favor and compress the images beforehand. This shortens the loading time and can thus contribute to a better Google ranking.
In addition, settings can be made for the release date and the EAN and manufacturer number can be entered.
Last but not least, details about the dimension and packaging can be defined.
The upper column should be self-explanatory. Sales unit means a numerical value that is precisely defined by the unit. So for example. 1L fabric softener in a bottle. Then the “1” would be the sales unit, “liter” the measurement unitand “bottle” the packaging unit. Sales unit always means the total quantity. That is, for a 6-pack of 0.5 bottles, the sales unit would be “3”. The basic unit is the value with which the basic price of a product is calculated. This means that you will probably enter a “1” here, as the basic price for one liter would then be calculated. For 100ml, the value would accordingly be 0.1. As a small note, if you do not have a unit of measurement displayed, then this can be added under Settings -> Shop -> units of measurement.

Advanced settings when creating the article

So much for the general article creation. If you scroll to the top you will see more tabs for advanced editing. For example, rules that were previously edited in the Rule Builder can be set up in the Extended Prices field.
Furthermore, it is possible to assign various properties to the product, which in the end make it easier for the customer to find the right product for him.
There is also the possibility to create a variant article from this single article.
