Shopware 5 vs. JTL Shop 5

Store system comparison 2021

In this episode it’s Shopware 5 vs. JTL-Shop 5.
This time it’s the Shopware 5 version we’re comparing to the JTL store system. Two German store systems in comparison. Who has the edge here? Find out in our screencast.

Shopware 5 vs. JTL-Shop 5 - Statistical comparison

Statistically, the two store systems are not that far apart. Both have around 6000 active websites. The fact that four and a half to five thousand are in Germany alone, and a good 200 each in Switzerland and Austria, already indicates that the two German store systems tend to be used in the DACH region. However, neither can dominate strongly in terms of numbers, as we did in our Shopify vs. Xt:Commerce comparison, for example.

Shopware 5 vs. JTL Shop 5 - The History

The open source Community Edition of Shopware has been around since 2010. However, the 5.0 version was released in 2015. The 5 store version of JTL software appeared 5 years later and is therefore the most current version of JTL store. From this, one can neither derive an advantage in favor of one system, nor a disadvantage to the detriment of the other. JTL-Shop 5 is undoubtedly a modern store system that can do everything it needs to create a full-fledged store in 2021. On the other hand, with store systems that have been in operation as long as Shopware 5, you can be sure that the infrastructure is really stable, because initial errors have already been eliminated by updates. However, it should be noted that Shopware 5 will be supported until 2024 according to the manufacturer. That’s still 3 years away. But if you start from 0, should you build your store with a system where there is already a possible support end? We can’t make this decision for you, but if this question is on your mind, we recommend our Shopware 5 vs. Shopware 6 article. In it you will be able to see that Shopware 5 still has some advantages over the 6 version. As you can see, there are some similarities between the two systems.

The common features of both store systems

Thus, both systems are self-hosted. However, there is the JTL hosting we had already talked about, as well as Shopware in the cloud. But that’s not what this video is about, we’ll cover that again separately. Another common feature is the very sophisticated and intuitive CMS systems. On one side the shopping worlds and on the other side the OnPage Composer. The most common payment providers can also be integrated with both systems. Both store systems can be tested and ultimately used free of charge. With Shopware this means that extensions have to be purchased and support is not included in the Community Edition. With JTL Shop 5 maximum 500 articles. After that, there’s a charge. For Shopware, this means paying around 2500€ for the Professional Edition or even around 30,000 for the Enterprise Edition.

Shopware 5 vs. JTL-Shop 5 - The costs

At JTL, the purchase price is 499€ for the standard version with which you can place an unlimited number of articles. For frequent sellers there is then also a Professional Edition with which then some modules are included, as well as the Basic Support, as well as an installation service is included. For the all-around carefree package with Gold Status Support you can set up a total of 3 stores and pay around 4000€. So what can be said overall. Both systems have more similarities than differences. Both have a strong community, both cover all the functions that a modern store system must provide, both have their focus on the German-speaking DACH region.

Who is compatible with the ERP/merchandise management system JTL-Wawi?

The difference between the two is that Shopware works as a standalone with its own database, whereas JTL-Shop is linked to the in-house merchandise management system. That means articles, customer data, categories etc. are transferred from JTL-Wawi. Shopware 5 can also be optionally connected to Wawi. Another difference is the price. With Shopware, you can scale immeasurably, but then you have to pay a lot of money for it. With JTL this is still within limits, but from a certain size it becomes difficult to scale further. Overall, however, two systems that convince, which is why we are both Shopware partner, as well as JTL service partner. So if you want some advice, we’ve packed both agency pages into the video description. There you can also make an appointment directly with our experts.
