Shopify vs. xt:Commerce

Canadian SaaS Shop System vs. German Open Source/Cloud Shop System

In this video, it’s Shopify vs. Oxid eShop.

Whether the Canadian SaaS store system appeals to you more than the open source store system from Freiburg, you can find out with the help of our store system comparison video.

Store system comparison between Shopify vs. xt:Commerce

Another comparison in which we contrast a store system with the online store in the cloud par excellence. So on the one hand Shopify and on the other hand one that I don’t think has ever been addressed in our screencasts before. This refers to the Austrian xt:Commerce. The graphical comparison from our video clearly shows that Shopify has the larger market share, but this does not necessarily mean anything about the quality. If we look at the relative distribution worldwide, it becomes clear, for example, that there are 8,700 xt:Commerce stores in operation in Germany and Shopify only has 12,600. That is still more yes, but not significantly more. But first of all, the basics of xt:commerce – what is it anyway?

What is xt:Commerce?

Whether or not the title of “e-commerce’s primeval rock or dinosaur” is praiseworthy is up to each individual to judge for themselves. What can be clearly said, however, is that there is a history behind xt:Commerce. Especially the 3 version, which evolved from the probably first store solution osCommerce, was very well received and enjoyed quite a bit of popularity. With the change of the source code, version 4 was then launched. They said goodbye to the open-source system, which could not continue the previous success. Meanwhile, there is the open source free xt:Commerce version and the proprietary 6s Pro versions.

Shopify vs. xt:Commerce - The pros and cons

Xt:Commerce is also modular, so it can be extended piece by piece with these modules. Already in the default theme xt:Commerce is resposive, but this is no different with Shopify. What is always emphasized as a positive aspect is the multilingualism, which means that you can build multilingual stores with xt:Commerce. With Shopify, you’re tied to several things for it. Let’s take a look at what Shopify itself states as a requirement. This can be implemented with a third-party app, the Shopify plan must allow this and the theme must be created multilingual. If this is given, it can also be implemented with Shopify. A further advantage of the eCommerce pioneer is the possibility to test the system without own server for 30 days. With Shopify, it’s just 14 days, then you’ll have to decide on a plan. On the other hand, Shopify has the much larger community with which you can exchange solutions. With Shopify, payment runs on a subscription model that ranges from $29 – $299. Especially if you are aiming for a multishop implementation, pay attention to the right plan. With xt:Commerce the whole thing is simplel about a one-time fee. The Pro version costs 449€, if you want to use the Multishop option, it’s 699€.

The summary

So what can now be said in summary? Contrary to the voices that often say xt:Commerce is outdated – meanwhile there are successors to version 3.
xt:Commerce 6 has everything a modern store system needs. And the pricing model in particular will probably convince some. Better to pay a one-time fee instead of ongoing subscription costs. Both systems must ultimately be set up independently. For specific questions, you will probably have to find an xtcommerce agency, whereas with Shopify these can be solved either by yourself or with the community. What is also often mentioned as a point of criticism is the small number of agencies for xtcommerce, which then keeps many merchants from choosing this store system. In any case, we can assure you of our help both as a Shopify agency and as an xt:Commerce agency.
