You should always create a backup before an update/upgrade.
Always perform a backup first
You are about to update your Microsoft SQL Server? ecomDATA is a specialist in this field and explains to you exactly what you have to pay attention to. After all, to avoid mistakes, there are a few things to do. First and foremost, it is important to always make a backup before performing an update or upgrade. This way you are on the safe side and your data is protected. Secondly, you must also ensure that you have enough memory available to perform the update. Often an update requires a lot of disk space, so you should always check first if there is enough disk space on the drive where the SQL Server is installed.
Database can be imported
After checking if the system disk where SQL Server is located has enough space, test if everything works properly. You can easily start the update itself via Windows Updates. But what about the Express version? Do you want to start a very large update, for example you are using MS SQL 2008 and want to upgrade to 2019? This is also possible. For such large version jumps, you can simply install a new MS SQL Server instance and import a backup of the database. Strictly speaking, this is no longer an upgrade, but an installation. Even if the database is older, you can import thanks to a backup.
Install new instance
This means that you can make such a big version jump without any intermediate steps. The only problem is: once you have upgraded the database to a particular version, there is no way to import it into an older version. While there are some possibilities with certain scripts, it can never be 100% guaranteed that it will actually work. For this reason, it is important to install the new version as an additional instance. Because this way you can import the database into this version. If, contrary to expectations, an error occurs, you can shut down the new instance again without any problems. And then continue working with the old instance, e.g. the 2008 version.
Stay up to date
So two different or even more SQL Server instances can be installed on one system at the same time. So you can easily decide for yourself whether you want to work with the old instance or the new one. Any system that stores data also needs a place to put it. And this place is as good as always the database. You use JTL-Wawi and wonder which version is best? Does it always have to be the latest one? In general, it is never advisable to have the truly latest and newest version of an operating system. Especially just newly released versions, may need some adjustment and improvement. Looking at the whole thing from a security perspective, however, it is definitely advisable to stay up to date.
