Search engine optimization for your Joomla website. Joomla is a content management system (CMS) and is used to create websites and blogs. In the best case, these are indexed in Google and Bing, rank for specific search terms and are thus found by potential prospects. But having your Joomla website on the first page for a certain keyword is not just arbitrary. Through search engine optimized content, Google and Bing rank your website as relevant and position the page in front.
To rank high on Google, Bing and Co. you should consider the following basics.
The metadata is structured data, page title and page description. This is the first thing potential customers notice when they come across you in the SERP, i.e. on the search results page of your search engine. This includes the meta title, which should be the first to contain your focus keyword. In the course of the following 55 characters, you should make it clear to the potential site visitor what it is about, and do so as vividly as possible. It is only important that you do not exceed the 55 characters, otherwise the title will be truncated by Google and all other possible keywords will not be indexed anyway. The meta description should describe the content in more detail. Furthermore, it is precisely here that you can attract attention by using special characters such as ✅. You should limit the page description to 145 characters.
Similar to WordPress, Joomla also offers a user-friendly, but also search engine friendly URL design. This means you can customize the URL of your Joomla pages. This gives you the opportunity to place your focus keyword here as well and thus increase your ranking. Furthermore, a structured and clear URL structure makes it easier for your site visitors to find their way around, but also for the Google bot to orient itself better when crawling your site.
The alias option is a great advantage for your Joomla SEO that other CMS's do not have. You can optimize your URL separately from the page title. This gives you the opportunity to keep this short and sweet, but go for the long-tail keywords with your URL. An example of this would be the page title eCommerce website, whereas your URL would be ecommerce-webseite-von-ebakery .
This means the loading time of your page. If your Joomla site is packed with megabyte-sized images, it will also take some time to load. It may also not load at all if your potential client's network is poor. Since Google attaches great importance to user-friendliness, the algorithm will penalize you for too long loading times. What Joomla offers you against a too weak pagespeed is the GZIP compression. If supported by the server, GZIP compression ensures that the server delivers a compressed version of the page to the browser. This shrinks the file size of the content considerably, which can reduce the loading time by up to 70%.
Besides fast loading times, a URL structure and the keyword-oriented meta data, the content is of course also crucial. Good content that adds value is just as important as compressing images for less data to speed up pagespeed. That means, readers of your site should take away something for themselves, which they could not already read on several other sites.
Each subpage should have a meaningful H1. This means that it should not begin with a trivial greeting. Instead, your focus keyword should be placed in here. Also, make sure that each subpage really only has one H1 heading. Excessively long flowing texts have a tiring effect. Therefore, subdivide your Joomla texts into subheadings. Possess these your focus keyword uses the H2. If this is not the case, use H3 – H6.
All the Joomla optimizations are of little use if your content is not indexed by Google. Therefore, a sitemap should be created that contains all your links in the form of an XML file. This process can be performed automatically or manually. If the page is new Google crawled the sitemap you submitted, optimally this is stored in the Google Search Console. After that, Google will be able to crawl the content of your page faster.
Images should be optimized for search engines! Firstly, they should be as small as possible in terms of data size (less than 100kb). This can be e.g. can be done by external tools like tinypng.com or as already mentioned by GZIP compression. Furthermore, the focus keyword should be included in the file name, but also in the alt tag. This is titled as image caption in Joomla.
In addition to the classic on-page SEO optimizations mentioned here, the reputation of your site on the web counts. This also includes the trust that Google attributes to you. You can use this e.g. by having other websites with strong linkjuice linking to you. This means you need a link building strategy here to also strengthen off-page SEO based your Joomla SEO (or Typo3 search engine optimization).
