Shopware vs. xt:Commerce

The comparison of store systems

In this episode, it’s Shopware vs. xt:Commerce ✅ We contrast the already well-known open source store system Shopware, the store system with history xt:Commerce 6. Who has the edge here?

Shopware vs. xt:Commerce - Shop systems put to the test

In this video we have Shopware as an open source store system on one side and xt:Commerce, which we already know, on the other. Both systems are very strongly represented in the DACH region. But how do they differ and when should you take which one. You can find out in this article.

What is suitable for the? - The target groups

Because Shopware has already been covered many times, let’s start with its competitor. xt:Commerce comes from Austria and is also modular like Shopware. That means you can upgrade your standard version. However, it must be said at this point that Shopware offers significantly more extensions here. What is also a common feature is the Community Edition – that is, a free version that you can use without license fees. However, where the wheat is separated from the chaff is the financial aspect. xt:Commerce 6 is available as a Singleshop version for around 450€ and in the Multishop version for around 700€. With Shopware, you have to pay a little more for the Enterprise solution. But that already shows us for whom what is intended. Xt:Commerce is less expensive and therefore also suitable for small and medium-sized businesses. With the scope that Shopware offers, even large projects can be implemented. However, Shopware tends to be used less as an entry-level solution for small businesses. Unless you are sure from the start that you will scale very quickly.

Shopware vs. xt:Commerce - The summary

In addition, Shopware now offers a cloud solution that even eCommerce starters can use to set up a store quickly and easily. This cloud solution does not yet exist at xt:Commerce. So, in the end, what can we say? If you are not using the Shopware Cloud version, you have source code access for both systems, you can use both for free, but also upgrade or extend your store with extensions. Shopware is the more lavish system, but it is also more demanding in terms of server technology. Also the training and individual adjustment needs either more time or know-how. That means with Shopware you will not get around the cooperation with an agency. On the other hand, there are hardly any limits in terms of scalability. With xt:Commerce you have fewer extensions, but lower costs, lower hosting requirements and less technical know-how is needed.

Shopware vs. xt:Commerce - These 3 options you have

So in the end, you can’t clearly say that one is better than the other. They both serve a different target group. That’s why you have three options at your disposal. Option # 1: You test out both systems in the free version. For that, if you really want to minimize the cost completely and work on macOS, I can recommend you to use MAMP. How to use e.g. Shopware installed locally on the virtual server environment, we have demonstrated to you in this Shopware blog. Option #2 you get advice from a multishop agency, like eBakery for example. is. Don’t make the mistake of asking an agency that only offers one system or the other. You can probably guess for yourselves what the result will be. It is better to choose an agency that has knowledge of many store systems and therefore knows which should be used for what. If you are interested, we will be happy to support you as a Shopware agency as well as an xt:Commerce agency. The only thing missing is option #3: You know from the start that you will choose neither the one nor the other store system. If that’s the case, check out our big store system comparison playlist.
