Image ads in Google search

In Google Search, some of our Google Ads customers have been using the new gallery ads for a few weeks now – this is an ad format with 4 to 8 images.

What are gallery ads?

The Google Gallery Ads were first announced at Google Marketing Live 2019 and, according to Google, will appear exclusively in the top position for the “smartphone” device type. A gallery ad consists of up to 3 display titles, a final URL, 4 to 8 images each with a description.

  • Ad title 1 to 3, with up to 30 characters
  • Final URL
  • 4 to 8 images, short description with up to 70 characters
  • Disclaimer (optional)

Note: Images for all ad formats, including gallery ads, must meet Google Ads quality requirements.

The following is not permitted:

  • Move images or GIF files
  • Images whose background was added afterwards and edited with Adobe Photoshop
  • Images with logos that were subsequently superimposed on the original image
  • Images with text that was subsequently superimposed on the original image
  • Multiple images combined into one image
  • Images that are identical or very similar to other images in the same ad, i.e. only slightly different from them

Image quality

The following is not permitted:

  • Not allowed images that are displayed on the side or upside down or do not occupy the entire area of the selected image size
  • Not allowed images that are blurry, indistinct or unrecognizable or that contain illegible text
  • Not allowed images with flickering and flashing effects or other distractions

Note: Mouse effects, such as graphics that respond to mouse movements, are allowed as long as they are triggered by the user and last no more than five seconds.

  • Not allowed Ads that maximize beyond the frame or otherwise interfere with the website or app

To create a gallery ad

If this ad format is available in your Google Ads account, you will find the navigation item “Gallery Ads” under “Ads and Extensions”.

  1. + Create new gallery ad
  2. Enter the Final URL
  3. Customization “Displayed path” (optional)
  4. Input of up to 3 ad titles (up to 30 characters each)
  5. Upload of min. 4 and max. 8 images

After that, click SAVE and the new gallery display will be verified.

Hint:
The order of the images may vary.

Experience with Google Ads gallery ads

We’ve created the new ad format with many of our clients now and so far we’re not that happy with the results. Google’s gallery ads offer another option for Google advertising and are comparable to Facebook’s gallery ads. However, since our testing phases are not over yet, we will only publish our results here in the coming days.
