Taxes in eCommerce

Taxes are not a very popular but necessary evil, especially for online retailers. Things get complicated when you sell not just in one country, but in several. The tax rate may even vary within the country, for example. in the USA. That’s why we want to provide some clarity with this video and show you where and how you can manage your tax rates internationally in Shopware 6.

But now off to the admin area. Here we have to go back to the settings and see the control menu, which we click on again. By default, three tax rates are always stored in Shopware.
The standard rate, the reduced rate and the super-reduced rate of 0%. But to what extent do they act and what are they important for? We need a standard tax rate in order to be able to display the prices in the first place.

Why do you need to set these?

This means, for example, that a customer finds your store through Google, you do not yet have any information about which country the customer comes from, i.e. where the goods will ultimately be shipped to. The respective tax rate is then based on this. It is therefore important to maintain it correctly here by clicking on the three dots and clicking on edit. Here you can now see all the standard tax rates of the respective countries. If you want to adjust this, click on the three dots again and on “Edit”. You have 4 setting options here. First the respective country, then whether this tax rate affects the entire country or only certain federal states, then the respective percentage rate and from when this change is to take effect. If you are selling to a country that is not yet included in your tax settings, you can simply create a new one by clicking “Add”. The procedure is the same as just described.

But let’s just change a tax rate at random and see what effect this has on the sales area. Now we have already added an item to the shopping cart and see that our standard tax rate has been set to 19%. However, if we were to select Malta as the country of delivery and click on Continue, the 33% would be displayed here. If this is not the case for you, empty your cache first.
