Add Shopware variants to a product

We show how it works

In this video, we show you how you can add variants to a product in Shopware. To do this, the desired properties must first be created. New variants can then be added to an existing variant article. You can find out how to do this and what you need to bear in mind here.

Variants in Shopware 6

In today’s article, we want to take a closer look at variants in Shopware 6. We have already explained how to create variant articles in a previous video. If you do not know this yet, it is also linked again.
Today we’ll be looking at how you can add variants to an existing product.

No variants without properties

But now off to the Shopware 6 backend. In order to be able to add variants, these must first be defined as characteristics or properties. be created. You can find these in the catalog under “Properties”. Here you can see all available properties, i.e. color, size, material, etc. with their property characteristics. If the desired property does not yet exist, it must be created using the “Create properties” button. However, if you want to add these to a product, you have to go to the product overview. Here we go to the existing variant product and can view all the necessary information in the “Variants” tab. Among other things, this product is available in 3 different colors and 3 different sizes. So a total of 6 different variants.

How to add Shopware variants to a product

But what if, for example, you want to sell your product to a third party? not want to offer it in blue and XL? We’ll show you in a moment how you can rule this out. But first we add a variant and therefore click on “Generate variants”.
We decide on the material and select 3 properties. In the second tab, you can adjust the price premiums and discounts. So if the product costs more in leather, the surcharge can be indicated here. The third tab is intended precisely for the process we just mentioned – excluding certain combinations of variants. We select the color blue and the size XL and save. You can already see that this combination has been included in the excluded properties. If we then click on “Next”, we see that the 6 variants we just saw have now become 15. You can see what they are here.

Add Shopware variants to a product - Edit individual variants

However, you may want to work on a specific variant again separately. Then you can simply click on this variant and you will find the following. The reason why all these fields are now grayed out and therefore not editable is that inheritance is activated. This means that the child items receive their values from the parent item.
If you want to avoid this, you have to click on this chain symbol. Now you can customize the name, manufacturer and description. If you want to return to the previous values, simply click on the chain symbol again.

Customization of the storefront view

So much for the technical adjustments. However, you can also customize the appearance here, i.e. how the variants should be displayed in the storefront. To do this, let’s go back to the storefront display. Do you want e.g. change the order, you can simply move the desired property characteristic with a mouse click. You can also go to Media symbols, for example. which then illustrate the respective property once again, as you can see here with the colors.

Add Shopware variants to a product - check in the frontend

Finally, you can determine how the whole thing should be fanned out. So you can fan out the properties in the product list or highlight a specific variant. Then you would go to “Show single product” and variant. This variant would then always be displayed first and would also be visible in the storefront. We remember “Blue and M”, save the whole thing and go to the front end. We click on the category in which the product is contained and “Blue M” is displayed directly in the product overview. On the product detail page, we are of course still shown all our variants, from which we can now choose.
