Important change in Google Ads

In line with theFebruary announcement, Google Ads will begin discontinuing the “Average Position” metric starting the week of September 30, 2019. So it will no longer be available in Google Ads in the future. The average position indicates the rank of your ads compared to other ads. Ad rank determines the order in which ads are placed on the page.

Impressions at top and top position

We recommend using the measurement values for impressions at the top and topmost position. They reflect the actual position of the ad on the page and not its placement compared to other ads.

Due to this change, the following will be disabled beginning the week of September 30, 2019:

  • Rules in which the average position is used
  • Custom columns with this measurement value
  • Saved reports filtered by average position
  • Saved filters with this measured value

Google Ads Scripts

Any Google Ads scripts in which the average position is used should be checked to ensure that they continue to work as intended.

Here, too, the measured value is no longer available:

  • Saved column groups
  • Saved reports in which the “Average position” column is used but not filtered by it
  • Brief overviews where this measurement value occurs in dashboards

If you use ValueTrack parameters, then
{adposition}
will return an empty string from the week of September 30, 2019.
