In this video we take a look at what Google search operators are and show you Google’s most popular search commands.

Let’s first start by understanding what exactly search operators actually are

Old familiar tool

Strictly speaking, search operators come from a time when Google could not provide search results as accurately as it does today. These search operators are special characters or words with a colon behind them that are entered into Google along with a search command to make an even more precise search query. In recent years, however, Google has eliminated a large number of search operators. The reason for this is that the algorithm of the search engine became better and better and so hardly any operators need to be used.

But now let’s look at the search operators that still work:

  1. “Search term”: quotation marks will only show you pages that contain your search query in the exact spelling.
  2. AND This query only shows results related to the two terms.
  3. OR This query is to search for both terms in one context
  4. – The minus is to exclude a term from the search query
  5. #..# How to search for specific time periods on Google
  6. _ With the help of the underscore the autocomplete can be controlled better, because it takes a placeholder function.
  7. $ or € This search command can be used to perform price related searches
  8. With the help of this command you can convert one unit to another: For example, a weight or a currency.
  9. weather: Finds the weather at a specific location with this search command.
  10. intext: How to find pages that contain a certain word.
  11. Movie: Finds information about a specific movie.
  12. related: How to find pages related to other websites.
