In this video we will show you what the SSL certificate types DV, OV, and EV stand for and what the difference between these certificates is.
First of all, the most important thing: Basically, all SSL certificate types are secure.
Let’s start with the first certificate type: DV
DV stands for Domain Validation. A website receives a DV certificate as soon as a certification authority has validated the domain. This means that it is confirmed that the website owner is also the owner of the domain. A domain validation is the fastest and also the simplest form of validation. The certification authority sends an automatic email to the address on file with Whois. Whois is in fact the database where you can see who is the owner of a particular domain. If the owner confirms the receipt of the mail, he will receive the SSL certificate. This certificate is suitable for smaller websites, blogs, forums and mail servers.
Now we come to the organization validation or short OV
Here, in addition to the domain, the certification authority also checks the identity of the organization behind the website. For this purpose, for example, an excerpt from the commercial register is used and, if necessary, contact is made by telephone. Thus, it is checked whether the applicant is also the legal owner of the company. So an OV SSL certificate also has a higher trust level than a DV. It is suitable for smaller web stores or corporate websites.
Now we come to our last certificate type: Extended Validation or EV for short
This type of certificate has the most comprehensive exam. Here, in addition to the verification of the domain and identity, it is checked whether the applicant is actually employed by the specified company and authorized to make an application. This certificate therefore has the highest trust value. However, the extensive testing is comparatively expensive and takes time. It is well suited for large online stores and online banks.
