Keyword research for online retailers

Finding the right SEO keywords as an online retailer

How do you carry out your keyword research in 2023? In the following tutorial, we will show you how you as an online retailer can find the right SEO keywords and which tool is suitable for this.

Keyword research for online retailers - how it works

We’re getting back into marketing and showing you in detail a method that every online retailer should start with. We are talking about keyword research. Because if you don’t know what your target group is looking for, every optimization is more or less a blind attempt to improve something or perhaps even make it worse. That’s why we’ll show you which tool you can use to find your keywords in a targeted and well-founded way, which you can then work with in the future, whether for on-page or off-page SEO or even SEA.

Why is this important?

So that everyone knows what the keywords are all about, we put ourselves in the shoes of the potential customer and enter something into the Google search. For example, are you a cell phone store that sells cell phone cases, then a keyword would be “cell phone case”. The first point of reference for keyword research is autosuggests. Google suggests the 10 most searched phrases for this keyword here. So you can conclude that people often search for “cell phone case iPhone 13”. If you don’t have anything in your range, this should give you food for thought. But make sure that your autosuggest does not contain any terms you have searched for yourself. These are displayed in purple. It is therefore advisable to use your browser’s incognito mode directly, as this does not display any terms that you search for yourself. We’ll leave it at cell phone cover for now and press Enter.

The goal of keyword research

Here we are in the SERPs. Your goal is to be placed as high up as possible on page 1 for your relevant search terms. However, there are keywords where it is almost impossible because the competition is too strong. This is exactly what keyword analysis is all about. To see which keywords are relevant on the one hand, but also to see how strong the competition is on the other. Google doesn’t tell us this directly, so we fall back on an SEO tool that can, namely the Keyword Finder from Mangools.

Keyword research for online retailers with the KW Finder

You can search for keywords, which we will do first, but you can also search for your domain and see which keywords you actually rank for. We enter our keyword “cell phone case” and set “Germany” as the country and “German” as the language.
The first thing the tool tells us is that it would be worth tackling this keyword, as we have a Difficulty Score of 28. This tells you how difficult it would be to place your site in the top positions. Click on the “I” for more information. Here you can see that the scores have been divided into 6 levels. From easy to dont do it. However, this figure says even more. For all values up to 10, it takes about 3 months of good SEO to see visible results here. From 10 – 25 it’s more like 6 – 8 months, so you can say our score of 28 is feasible, but needs 1 year of good SEO work. You will also receive more detailed information. With a search volume of 140,000, there is enough search potential to make the keyword worthwhile.

Keyword research for online retailers - the most important values explained

This is also very stable, as the volume has hardly changed in recent years. Another advantage of this tool is an unadulterated SERPs view. Even if you use incognito mode, your local data will be taken into account. This means that someone from NRW will get different search results than someone from Hamburg. Why why why why explains you among other things our local SEO video that we have linked to you at the top right. In any case, the KW Finder shows you an unadulterated view so that you know who your competition is. In the left column are alternative keywords based on your search query. The search volume, the CPC price, the PPC competition and the Keyword Difficulty Score, which I have just explained, are compared here. A PPC value of 100 tells you that the competition is very high, so you would have to set a CPC price of at least €0.97 to be considered in Google Ads.

The filter function

Is that, for example. too high and you say you don’t want to go over €0.75 anyway, then you could simply filter it here and only get results of less than 75 cents. You could of course do the same for all other values. You can also use the Questions tool to directly output relevant questions for content creation. This means, for example, that often asked why cell phone cases turn yellow. So you can use this keyphrase as the lead question for your blog article, be displayed in the SERPs and then go into detail in the article on how to clean it up.

Keyword research for online retailers - this is what matters

To shed some more light on this. Keyword research is about finding out what people are looking for and how they ultimately enter it as a search term. If e.g. no one enters “How do I clean my cell phone case”, but you answer exactly that in your blog article, then no one will find it anyway. But if people search for “Why is my cover yellow”, then you need to take advantage of this, use it as a keyword, talk about it in the first few paragraphs, but fill the main part of the article with cleaning tips. I hope this has clarified the point. For example, are you a larger company and there is a department for marketing analysis and a department for content creation, then CSV export is an important tool. This allows you to select your keywords and export them as an Excel table to make them available to the other department.
