Google Shopping Costs

If you run an online store, you should also consider participating in Google Shopping. Google Shopping is a price comparison tool from Google. One advantage is the high findability. If a customer searches Google for a specific product, the best results are displayed right at the top, even before the actual search results and Google Ads come in.

Set up Google Shopping

To list your products on Google Shopping, you first set up the Google Merchant Center. Your products come to the Merchant Center via data feed. This data feed is basically one big file with all your products.

There are plugins for the major store and ERP systems that create this feed in the correct format. After that, go to the Merchant Center and register this feed there. It is then retrieved by Google at regular intervals so that the data is always up to date.

Google distinguishes main feed and subfeeds. While the main feed contains the basic data such as name, description and price, the subfeeds contain information such as whether an item is currently on special offer, etc.

Similar to Google Ads, with Google Shopping you pay per click on your product. Google Shopping is therefore not a separate marketplace like eBay, but “only” a product listing. If a customer likes the price, they will be directed to your online store by clicking on the product. However, this does not mean that a purchase has been made and the customer can still cancel.

So, you should make sure that your online store is working well. This starts with fast hosting, continues with a well-designed store and simple purchase process and ends with functioning and customer-friendly payment methods.

It is difficult to give a real price, because it always depends on how popular certain items are, etc.. But on average you can expect about 11% of the purchase price. There is no base fee, so costs really only occur when someone clicks on your product.
