Create a new Shopware 6 category

To make your Shopware 6 online store as organized and structured as possible for you, but especially for your customers, the categorization of your products should be as logical as possible. As the name suggests, there are categories for this purpose. How to create these Shopware 6 categories we explain now.
Under Catalogs and Categories you will first get to the category overview. To create a new category here in our first catalog, we create a new subcategory using the context menu. In this case, simply times with the name“dishes“. To which we add another subcategory called“cups“. The first important point to consider here is the activation of each category. Every newly created category is deactivated by default, i.e. it is not displayed in the frontend. We click on the toggle switch“Category is activated” and now we see in the frontend that there is a new category under which the subcategory“Cups” can be found.

Structure categories, user-defined categories and classic categories

Each category can now be customized in the edit menu. So the name can be changed, tags can be added and also the category type can be determined. In addition to the classic category, there is a so-called structure category, which is used solely to maintain the structure, but does not carry any content itself. That means nothing would be displayed when you click on it. In addition, a special category can be created, for which a user-defined link is stored, which can then be used, for example, to create a link to a specific page. leads to a subshop.
However, in this blog we will deal with the classic category type. As you already know from our Worlds of Experience video, you can assign a layout here that is based on the respective category from the Worlds of Experience. We will store a payment and shipping method standard layout for our “Mugs” subcategory once for demonstration purposes. If you scroll down a bit you can adjust the appearance in the navigation or remove this category for the navigation completely by clicking on “Hide in navigation”. The display image and the description can then be adjusted. You can assign products to the category you have created beforehand and finally enter everything that will then be displayed in the SERPs on Google, Bing and Co. So the meta title and the meta description. If you are interested in Shopware SEO, we already have a separate video for it, you can access it as usual in the top right corner.

More customization options when creating your Shopware 6 categories

For our subcategory “Mugs” we store a payment and shipping method standard layout once for demonstration purposes. Scroll down a bit and you can adjust the appearance in the navigation or remove this category from the navigation altogether by clicking “Hide in navigation”. The display image and the description can then be adjusted. It can be assigned to the category products, which you must have created before, and finally all that can be entered, which is then played out in the SERPs on Google, Bing and Co. So the meta title and the meta description. If you are interested in Shopware SEO, we already have a separate video for it, you can access it here: Shopware SEO.

Customization without having to create new worlds of experience

If we now save the whole thing, the shopping and payment sample page should be found under this category in Frontend.
This layout assignment has added a“Contents” tab at the top in addition to the general settings options. Here you can make individual changes that only apply to this category or subcategory and do not affect the experience world layout.
We can check this briefly by changing the heading for our“Tableware” category and then creating a new subcategory, for example. and then link our standard imprint layout, make the category active and save it.
