Shopware vs. PrestaShop

The comparison of store systems

In this online store comparison 2021, we present the latest Shopware store system Shopware 6 on the one hand and compare it with the French PrestaShop. One exists in the cloud, the other does not. You can find out what other differences there are in this video.

Shopware vs. PrestaShop - General Information

In today’s episode, we will once again use the German store system Shopware 6 as a reference and compare it with the French store system PrestaShop. PrestaShop has also been around for a very long time. In 2007 it went on the market and since then it has been constantly optimized and internationalized. An open source system that probably not everyone has on their radar – the underdog, so to speak.

Shopware, on the other hand, has significantly more active users, but PrestaShop’s community is very active and not even that small. Prestashop work on the freemium model. So in principle free to use, then also expandable, which costs, however. PrestaShop knows how to shine with over 2500 plugins and 2000 design themes, most of which, however, have to be paid for. What advantage Shopware has over PrestaShop is the fact that Shopware is also available as a cloud version. With PrestaShop you have to take care of the hosting yourself in any case. But if you want to have a look at the store completely free of charge and you happen to be a Mac user, we recommend the following. Download MAMP with which you can create a local server environment. After that, check out our PrestaShop playlist. The best way is to watch our video “PrestaShop setup in under 10 minutes“. This demonstrates how to install and set up a prestaShop.

Shopware vs. PrestaShop - The Differences

But what are the differences between the two systems? Both systems work for free, but only with very sparse features. If you want to use the store fully for online marketing, you have to leave money. This can gradually add up for PrestaShop. With Shopware, you can either buy or rent the Professional Edition or actually go to the Enterprise Editions. However, there has to be a lot of revenue behind it.

With PrestaShop there are no plans in this sense, but you buy the extensions little by little. Both systems are open source, so you can customize them as you like, which in turn requires developer skills. In addition, there are more Shopware than PrestaShop agencies in Germany. However, if you find a theme perfectly suitable and want to rely on PrestaShop, then eBakery as a PrestaShop agency would support you with your project.

Shopware vs. PrestaShop - Summary

In summary, it is once again an individual decision. PrestaShop works first of all as a freemium store system free of charge in the basic configuration. Therefore, use a test system to see for yourself which functions are available and which need to be booked. Shopware is rather stripped down in the Community Edition. You can get an idea of the system, which definitely has some compelling features, such as the experience worlds, the rule builder, and other features, but probably won’t get by with the Community Edition alone. However, what is the strong feature of Shopware – it can be scaled up. So if you expect a huge increase in the next few years, the system might be worth it, otherwise PrestaShop is also not a bad choice for small and medium-sized businesses.
