Shopware Cloud vs. Shopify

Two cloud store systems in comparison

Shopware Cloud vs Shopify. The Canadian classic and the German store system that has now also existed in the cloud since 2020. Find out who can convince in which category in the video.

Shopware Cloud vs. Shopify - Who makes the race?

We have already described the Canadian store system as the classic in the cloud on several occasions. Since mid-2020, however, there has been a strong competitor from Germany. Of course, we are talking about Shopify on the one hand and its direct competitor Shopware Cloud on the other. What does who have to offer? You will find out in this article.

A statistical comparison

Contrasted, we see in the video that Shopify has by far the larger market share. As a native English-speaking system, this is no wonder. But that doesn’t have to mean anything for now, just that the cloud model is probably one of the reasons for Shopify’s success. Quick, easy and uncomplicated start without programming knowledge. This is now also possible with Shopware as we know from the last episode. So can the Shopware Cloud version also tie in with this in the future?

General facts about Shopware

Shopware has already been active for over 20 years, but has so far been able to shine more with the Community Professional and Enterprise Editions, which had to be self-hosted. How fast and easy it is to set up a Shopify store, we had already demonstrated in the corresponding article. Similar to Shopify, Shopware also allows you to create a store presence within a few minutes, which can be easily configured and filled with content and products. In the cloud version, you have access to the full range of functions offered by the standard version of the open source store software Shopware 6. The most important business processes such as registration and the purchasing process are included as standard. Payment service providers and shipping providers can be easily connected. Currently, there are nowhere near as many payment service providers available as with Shopify, but the most common providers for Germany can still be used.

Experience worlds as CMS, but no mass upload possible?

In order to provide the user with an appealing shopping experience, content and e-commerce are combined with the help of experience worlds. The worlds of experience are also based on the modular principle, via which content can be created and maintained in a structured manner using drag-and-drop. However, it lacks tools to process content or products en masse, which is why Shopware Cloud is rather less suitable for larger stores with very many products. We had already said in the Shopware Cloud vs. JTL Shop 5 comparison that this is rather intended for beginners. Those who want to scale are given the option to migrate their store and use the Enterprise variant. There are also extensions that are now called apps in Shopware Cloud. With them you can use the Cloud Shop to extend certain functionalities. Shopware is constantly working on it, but the scope is currently still somewhat smaller than Shopify.

Shopware Cloud vs. Shopify - The legal security

However, where Shopware knows how to shine, especially for German merchants, is the topic of DSGVO and legal security. With Shopware, the data is stored exclusively on European servers. With Shopify, first of all some changes have to be made to adapt the store itself to the German Standrads. By the way, we have worked out how to do this for Shopify in the playlist in cooperation with the Händlerbund. On the other hand, Shopify itself makes sure that the data of European stores is also stored on European servers, but this cannot always be guaranteed for third-party apps from the Shopify App Store. Therefore, care must be taken here for each extension as to which data it has access to and where the data is then stored.

Shopware Cloud vs. Shopify - A Summary

Overall, however, we can say that these are two very, very strong systems. Shopware in the cloud is, as already mentioned, at least until now, more of an entry-level system, but one that can be migrated without any problems. Shopify is rather intended for international sales, Shopware in turn is adapted to the German market by default, so you can not clearly say which system is better suited for whom now. This must be considered on a case-by-case basis. What we as a Shopware partner, as well as Shopify agency can do for you with pleasure, in order to recommend you so individually for you the suitable system. But because this could still be an exclusion criterion, we’ll take a look at the price plans at the end. As we already know, these range from $29 – $299 for Shopify. You can use Shopware in the cheapest version for free with 3% revenue share. The most expensive version costs 199€ per month.
