In this video, we’ll look at what a 301 and 302 redirect is, when to use them, and how both of these redirects affect SEO.

Let’s start with 301 forwarding

A 301 redirect notifies search engines that a page has been permanently moved. The keyword here is permanent. Often this type of redirection is used when additional domains are purchased, but you want to send users to the primary domain through them. This can be the case, for example, if you want to be found despite spelling mistakes. A 301 redirect can also be used when specifying which domain has a default website. For example, should this be www.ebakery.de or just ebakery.com? People generally tend to omit “www” when typing in web pages. So in that case it is helpful to use a permanent 301 redirect to ensure that the correct web page is reached for both input variations. Incidentally, this also applies if you do search engine optimization for specific store systems, e.g. Shopify SEO.

Background on 302 forwarding

The 302 redirect is used to inform a search engine that a page has been moved only temporarily. This redirect can be used, for example, to send users to a new page for a short period of time because the actual website is being redesigned or updated.

The important thing to remember is that 302 redirection is only used if you plan to bring back the old website. A 302 redirect can also be used to test a new page for a period of time without affecting the placement of the original page. This methodology is also often used with store systems – for example, Shopware 6 SEO.

So how do these two redirects affect SEO?

If a 301 redirect is used, Google removes the old page from the index and the largest value of the first page is transferred to the new one. It is important to note that search engines need some time after using a redirect until they notice this change and possible effects on the rankings are recognized. With a 302 forwarding this is different. If it is used correctly, then everything remains the same. The original page is indexed in Google and no value is transferred to the new URL. Google knows in this case that the redirect is temporary.
