Create and submit Shopify sitemap

How to rank on Google with your Shopify store

In this Shopify tutorial, we will show and demonstrate how to add the Shopify sitemap to Google Search Console so that your Shopify product pages, category pages and other store pages can be found in Google Search.

Create Shopify sitemap and submit to Google

In this article we want to explain to you how your product pages, store pages, category pages, but generally also the URL of your Shopify store get into the SERPS of Google. A more detailed explanation can be found in our Shopware Sitemap Video which we will link to in the upper right corner. Basically, the sitemap is an .xml file in which all pages of a website are noted as links.

What is the sitemap?

If the sitemap is forwarded to Google Search Console, it helps the Google bot to know which pages to crawl. This means that they are indexed by Google and displayed in the search results. To view the sitemap of your store you only have to enter the domain of your store and at the end “/sitemap.xml” in the URL bar of your browser. But how is the sitemap now transferred to Google’s Search Console.

Create and submit Shopify sitemap - The arrangements

As a precaution, let’s first remove the password protection in our Shopify backend by going into the configurations of our online store, uncheck it and save. Now let’s go into Google Search Console. To do this, simply enter “Google Search Console” in Google, then click on “Start now” and enter your URL in URL Prefix. Then click on “Go to Property”, then go to the top left of the displayed online store URL and select the HTML tag as the confirmation method. You have to copy it and add it to your Shopify code.

Completion in Google Search Console

To do this, we go back to the backend to Theme and select“Edit code” as action. Make sure that the“theme.liqiud” is selected and paste the code you just copied directly under the head tag and save. Now when the verification is done, you can go to Sitemaps in Search Console on the left, see the verified domain and now you can add “/sitemap.xml” behind it and submit it. This will submit the sitemap and you will see after a few days that the status changes to“Successful“, which would complete the whole process.
