In this video, we will show you 3 Google alternatives that not only offer more privacy, but are also an ecological alternative.
In Germany, Google is the most widely used Internet search engine, with a market share of around 94 percent, and is used by almost every user on a daily basis. From an environmental perspective, however, Google is not number one. So there are Google alternatives that are not only greener, but also offer even more data security. We now introduce you to 3 of these sustainable search engines. Let’s start with the first one:
Gexsi
Gexsi search engine was founded in 2018. Here, the social commitment is emphasized above all: “The search engine for a better world”. Money is earned here through search queries, which is then in turn used to support social projects. These projects have so far included, for example, the SeaSoilution project, in which brown algae are fished from the sea and processed into biofertilizer. Or the Tip Me project, which helps people tip seamstresses in the textile industry. The search results displayed are based on Bing’s search technology, which is not comparable to Google’s quality, but is perfectly sufficient for everyday use. Gexsi is a pure social business, where 100 percent of the revenues are used for social projects.
Ecosia
Ecosia is a German search engine founded in 2009. Here, at least 80 percent of the surplus profit generated by advertising is used for forest conservation projects. So far, Ecosia has managed to plant about 148 million trees. The search results here are also generated by Bing, but optimized by its own algorithm.
Ekoru
At Ekoru, every search is meant to help clean up the ocean. The search engine is powered by hydropower and the servers are CO2 neutral. Again, revenue is funded by advertisers and 60 percent of the revenue goes in equal shares to each of Ekoru’s two partners: Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and Operation Posidonia. By the way, Ekoru does not store search history and IP addresses either.
