Hash + Tag

The term hashtag is a combination of the English words “hash” and “tag”. A hash comes from software development and stands there for a test symbol. This is represented by a diamond or a double cross. Tag stands for mark. So a hashtag is a tag or keyword with a double cross in front of it. The hash symbol sets the hashtag apart from the rest of the text.

Meaningful thematic assignment

Hashtags are often used at the end of a post or a tweet. With this, users give your social media posts a thematic assignment. On Instagram, TikTok or Twitter, this integrates the post into a keyword search. Other users can search for posts on a certain topic or publish their own posts on a certain topic by using a hashtag.

If hashtags are used correctly, users will have a much easier time finding interesting or popular posts. A good example of this is the Black Lifes Matter movement, where all posts on this topic can be found under the hashtag #blacklifesmatter. This example is also a good illustration of how important hashtags are on social media these days. Hashtags not only make posts more discoverable for users, but users can take action themselves through them and even start a movement.

Categorization in social media

Hashtags are also important because they help algorithms on social media categorize a post, making it easier for platforms to serve up the right content to users.

Basically, you use hashtags by first typing the hash symbol and then typing the keyword without a space. On social media platforms, hashtags are automatically recognized as soon as they are entered and are also automatically linked. So after a post is posted, users can click on that hashtag and be taken to a collection page where they can find all the posts that have used the same hashtag. If you use several hashtags in a row, they must be separated by a space.

If you use hashtags, they should be well thought out. That is:

  • Only hashtags that are also appropriate to the published content should be used.
  • Not too many hashtags should be used at once
    Hashtags should not be too generic. The hashtag #New to the
  • example is used so frequently that it is no longer possible to specifically categorize here.
