Google Core Update - The Core Web Vitals

If you’ve been following our videos or blogs for a while, you’ve probably come across our Google Core Web Vitals article. If this is not the case, we recommend you to catch up with it either right now or when you have finished reading. Because Core Web Vitals are closely related to our topic today – Google Core Updates. We want to clarify what is behind this, why it also affects you online retailers and what you can do to be prepared for the May update.

What is a Google Core Update?

First of all, the term “Core Update” means a fundamental change in the algorithm. This can mean, for example, that the algorithm now places web pages in the SERPs according to other criteria. Once again as a small summary for those who are in search engine optimization are not yet so fit. The Google Bot crawls websites and evaluates them according to certain criteria. These criteria are specified by Google, but can change from time to time. A common rhythm at Google is an annual core update. Smaller things are adjusted in the search engine from time to time, such as the playout of video carousels, but these do not have a massive impact. With core updates, however, it can be that websites lose significant rankings. Since your online store is nothing else, this can also affect you. But you can also gain rankings. This means that Google crawls the pages, evaluates them and forms a ranking of the pages from this evaluation basis. Accordingly, you get your ranking for the respective keyword. But why does Google change the criteria at all?

Why does Google change the algorithm?

Ultimately, Google wants to offer its users the best experience possible. Accordingly, the algorithm became better from time to time and above all more intelligent and punished spam links, evaluated not only the link quantity, but also quality, rewarded page operators who kept their content up to date, and so on. Still in 2012 it was common practice to “slap” the focus keyword as often as possible in a text, which was then rewarded with high placements on the first page. This is keyword-oriented work, but a horror for the reader – i.e. the user. So nowadays, there’s a lot more emphasis on making sure the user experience is as positive as possible. But how do you know or how do you find out that a new update is coming?
