Integrate and use Google Analytics in Shopify

If you really want to see what’s going on in your store and when, you should use Google Analytics. If you include Google Analytics in Shopify, data on advanced eCommerce is analyzed. This data indicates, among other things, how the customer places goods in the shopping cart, which ones he removes and when, and much more. As a Shopify agency, we’re happy to set up Google Analytics for you so you can get a detailed overview of customer movement.

You can find more info here: Advanced eCommerce Reports

With these analytics, you can make store optimizations and make more sales. You can learn how to register Google Analytics and set it up in Shopify here.

Register Google Analytics

On the Google Analytics website, you first register free of charge. After that, a few basic data about your website will be requested.

Similar to Google Ads, you first define an account name that you can later use to make internal distinctions. You can manage multiple websites under one Google Analytics account. After that, you specify which data you want to analyze – to get the most comprehensive picture, enable everything. It has no negative consequences, so you should activate all recommended analyses as well.

When asked what you would like to have analyzed, you choose website, since you have an online store and not an app.

Last but not least, you need to specify which domain you want to monitor. As usual with Google, this is called “Property”. Prove that you own this domain and you are good to go.

Set up Google Analytics in Shopify

When the Google Analytics signup is complete, you will receive a Google Analytics ID, also called a Tracking ID. This ID looks something like this: UA-99xxxx-xx.

Now you just need to add them to Shopify. To do this, log into the admin area and click on “Onlineshop / Configurations”.

Now scroll down to Google Analytics in the right pane and enter your ID there, then click “Save” at the very bottom right:

To check if Google Analytics might already be enabled, check the corresponding entry in your theme. To do this, click on “Themes” in the left pane.

and then click on “Actions / Edit code” on the right.

From now on you have to be careful, because if you make a wrong change, even if it is only a removed bracket, your store will not be displayed correctly.

Click on “{/} theme.liquid” on the left.

Now search for entries named ga.js, dc.js, gtag.js or analytics.js. If one of them is present, Google Analytics is already enabled and you can get statistics on Google’s website.

Evaluations from Google Analytics

You can specify whether you want to enable simple or advanced tracking in Google Analytics. Basic tracking shows only transaction and sales data, while advanced tracking also shows where the visitor left your site, when they added which product to their cart, and more.

Since there are no additional costs or privacy issues (your visitors have to agree to Google Analytics, either way), you are free to choose. If your store could be doing better, enable advanced tracking and see what your visitors are doing.

We will gladly take care of the correct setup and analyses so that you can fully focus on your core business. We will also optimize your store or give you advice on how to move forward. Simply arrange a free initial consultation.
