Every successful e-commerece project requires a great deal of expertise. Our philosophy is not to keep this knowledge to ourselves, but to share it. You can find interesting tutorials, downloads, tools and much more here.
In the following tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a free logo and use it for your Shopify store in under 8 minutes. This time we have made sure that the entire creation process is completely free of charge, so you won’t end up paying a cent.
We start in Canva, i.e. www.canva.com.
Here you can simply log in with an existing Facebook or Gmail account, but you can also create a new one. Either way, it should look like this in the end. We click on “Create design” and select “Instagram post”. This gives us an empty, square white area. Exactly what we need. Now it depends on which industry you are in. However, only two elements are needed to create a simple logo. Firstly, a visual element, for our case – the Pencil Factory, we therefore take a pencil.
You can find these icons, illustrations etc. under “Elements”. Enter pencil. If you see a crown on the graphic, this means that it is only included in the paid Pro plan. But we also find a high-quality, free graphic. You can now rearrange them, make them larger or smaller and also rotate them with this two-arrow symbol. The second thing we need is scripture. You can find these under “Text”. We’ll just enter Pencil here for now. But we don’t like the font. We can change this at the top of the line. Now we can duplicate the one block. If you want to rearrange an element, simply click on it and drag it to the desired spot. We now change the lower “Pencil” to “Factory”, enlarge it a little and adjust everything to each other.
Very good, now our logo is ready. The good thing about Canva is that you could still customize almost all elements. Ex. the font color or the colors of the pencil. But we are satisfied and therefore click on “Share” and “Download”.
What we would normally need now would be a file with a transparent background. However, this is only available in the paid version. That’s why we’ll show you a trick. Now download the logo as a non-transparent PNG. Now we go to a page called remove.bg
Here we upload the file we have just created and the white background is eliminated. Click on Download again and save the file. The problem we will have now when we open the file is that we will have a lot of Dead Space. You can’t see this space around the logo now, but it will become a problem in Shopify. Therefore, a preview app will now open for you. I show it once for Mac in this video. Selects the area that is to apply to the new file at the end. So how big should the logo or logo file be in the end? Now click on Cmd + C, go to “File” at the top and click on “New from clipboard”. We will now save this file again.
Please pay very close attention here. JPEG is probably selected here by default, which does not work. We need PNG and have to check the “Alpha” box. This means that transparency is also taken over. Now click on save. Perfect, this is the final file that we will upload to Shopify. But where exactly?
In your admin area you have to go to “Theme” and click on “Customize”, which will open the Theme Editor.
Here you can click on the cogwheel symbol to access the settings. And the first thing you will see is the logo. Upload your logo file here and then click on Done. You can now adjust the logo width, but you have now successfully integrated your logo into Shopify.
But the logo is not the only global visual element. If you take a look at the URL line, you may have noticed the icon. With Shopify, it’s just the normal logo. However, it would not be suitable for us, as it contains lettering that simply looks too small. By the way, the name is “Favicon”. This can then be uploaded right here. We go back to Canva and delete the text out by simply clicking remove after it is selected. Now we center the pen and draw it very large. Incidentally, these pink lines that pop up are intended for centering. If these are present both horizontally and vertically, then the element is in the center. We save the logo as usual. And remove the background again with remove.bg. In Shopify, all you have to do is upload the correct file, press “Done” and save. Then go back and open your Shop Preview with the eye. You should notice that the favicon is now also visible at the top of the tab bar.
This means you can create a logo for your online store quickly, easily and free of charge. If there are any questions about this, leave them in the comments. If you would like to have a more complex logo designed, please contact us. Our store designers will be happy to create your individual logo.
