Threads launches in Europe
Twitter X competitor now also available in Germany
The Threads launch in Europe begins on 14.12 at 12 noon. For Germany, this also means that the Twitter X competitor from the Meta Group called Threads can now be used. Find out how and why there was a six-month delay to the rest of the world here.
European launch of Meta's short messaging service
Today is the day and if you’re watching the video, the European launch has probably already begun. We are talking about Meta’s threads starting on 14.12 at 12 noon. Then you too will be able to use it from Europe without a VPN or detours. But why did it take so long and how do you get the app?
What is Threads?
A brief summary of what threads actually are. The long version is linked in the top right-hand corner as an info card. Threads is Meta’ s Zuckerberg answer to Twitter, or X in the meantime. Threads is therefore very similar in structure. It is about Post short messages with a maximum of 500 characters. The account is linked to your Instagram. So far, 100 countries have been able to use the Meta service since July 2023. Why is access for Europe only being released six months later? According to Meta spokeswoman Christine Pai, this is due to “regulatory uncertainties”. This was presumably a reference to the Digital Markets Act. The DMA prohibits companies above a certain size from sharing users’ personal data – including their name and location – across different platforms without their consent in order to target them with advertising. In addition, according to the DMA, platforms should not give preferential treatment to products from their own group. This would also be the case with a close link between Threads and Instagram.
Threads launches in Europe - This makes it possible
However, this close link was already partially severed in November. Previously, it had not been possible to delete the Threads channel without also deleting the Instagram channel. But this is now possible. It remains to be seen to what extent the European version will differ from the US version. At least we can say that the US launch was a complete success. Meanwhile, 100 million users are said to be active on Threads at least once a month, as announced by Meta boss Zuckerberg himself.
But in the end, how does Threads differ from its direct competitor X?

This overview provides a good overview. Free users receive more characters per post in threads. However, if you are an X Blue member, you receive 25,000 characters. Paid ads can only be placed on X. To advertise in the meta universe, you have to make do with Instagram or Facebook. DM’s are also only available at X. The trending/explore section is only available at X, as is an overview for hashtags. This has been completely absent from threads so far. Videos can be up to 5 minutes long for threads, but only 2:20 minutes for X.
