Shopify Planet App

How to make your online store climate neutral

In this Shopify tutorial, you’ll learn how to use the Shopify Planet app to make your online store carbon neutral, i.e. to offset your carbon footprint. More sustainability with carbon-neutral shipping is the motto of this Shopify app.

Shopify Planet App - Sustainability in Online Retail

For today’s episode, we’re cutting to a completely new topic for once. Especially in online retail you are confronted with current problems like climate neutrality and carbon footprint, i.e. how your company’s CO2 balance is. The young generation in particular is setting an example in this respect and accordingly welcomes companies in both offline and online retail that are thinking about this and trying to act in a climate-neutral way.

Why online retail is affected

Because especially with topics like returns, as well as globalization and international shipping, critical voices are raised. That’s why we now take up the topic and show you a Shopify alternative to calculate your own carbon footprint and also to improve it. Should you still have the road to your optimized Shopify store ahead of you and are looking for experts, we at eBakery are happy to support you as a Shopify agency.

What the Shopify Planet app can do

But now back to the Shopify Emissions App Planet. “Carbon-neutral shipping” is Shopify’s own claim to fame – because this app comes from Shopify itself. Thus, the estimated emission values for each order are calculated and visualized in the dashboard. Three different plans can then be subscribed to within the app. You then use these to pay the specified amount per order to the organization to offset your carbon footprint.
This has two distinct advantages for you as a merchant. First of all, you are actively doing something for the environment. But you also get the opportunity to visualize this as a certificate in your store, which in turn creates an incentive to order from you.

What does CO2 balance mean?

But what does it actually mean to balance the CO2 balance? Shopify works with organizations that know exactly how to do this. These include Running Tide, Heirloom or Grassroots Carbon, which you probably haven’t heard of. What they do, however, is use processes that absorb the carbon dioxide, which is then either sunk into the earth or ends up at the bottom of the ocean.

In summary, this means that you can first and foremost take a closer look at how much emissions you yourself cause. You can then decide for yourself how much you want to spend per order to offset these emissions, and you will even receive a certificate in your store that will be displayed to potential customers before they make their purchase. We think this is a contemporary and successful concept, which is why this app has also found its way into our channel.
