According to Shopify, all that is needed to get started with Shopify POS is a Shopify card reader to accept payments. In addition, a tablet or smartphone is required to use the Shopify POS app. After that, the system can be adapted to further needs.

More about the equipment

Let’s take a closer look at the equipment: The Shopify POS app is used to manage the POS system, perform purchase transactions and process payments. The POS app works with these various iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Compared to a smartphone, a tablet is the better choice because of the screen size, which allows a better display of the price. In Germany, the price must be clearly visible to customers at the checkout.

Let’s move on to the card reader

A card reader is required to accept card payments. Shopify offers an in-house card reader for this purpose. This can read both EC and credit cards. Information is automatically and quickly exchanged between the POS system and the card reader thanks to native integration with the Shopify POS system.

Another part is the receipt printer and paper

A receipt obligation has been in force in Germany since January 01, 2020. Therefore you need a receipt printer and suitable thermal paper. Shopify also offers compatible devices in your store here. These connect directly to the Shopify POS via Bluetooth and print the receipts completely automatically.

The next device is the barcode scanner

While the tablet’s camera can also be used to scan products, this can be impractical, especially when dealing with a high volume of customers and scanning multiple products. Shopify offers the SocketScan S700 as a barcode scanner here. In the app, by the way, products can alternatively be found via the search field and added to the shopping cart.

Finally, a cash drawer is needed

This must be TSE compliant. Shopify also offers an in-house 16 inch model for this in the store. So that the tablet doesn’t just lie around on the counter, an iPad stand is also offered with it. With the help of the stand, the overall image looks visually appealing and can be used optimally. Shopify also offers a complete solution in the store: The Star mPoP Basic. This is a cash drawer with a combined receipt printer and iPad stand. Combining this with an iPad gives the device the classic look of a cash register.
