Google had already announced a major update some time ago and rolled out Page Experience for mobile as early as summer 2021. Now the ranking factor Page Experience is rolled out for desktop as well.

In this video we show you what the desktop update to the ranking factor Page Experience means for the topic SEO.

Google algorithm extension

Page Experience is an update to Google’s algorithm that is designed to further improve the search engine. Through the update, Google is able to ignore the classic SEO factors and look at the user experience, because in the future, the focus should be on the actual user experience that a website offers its visitors. So now it’s not just about backlinks, OnPage measures or technical SEO, but also about ranking signals like Core Web Vitals, HTTPS security or the absence of annoying popups. When this update was announced by Google, there was a lot of fear among many SEOs that this could shift some things in the search results.

Search Console helps

However, in order for site owners and SEOs to analyze their performance in terms of user experience, Google offers a Search Console section to assist them in their assessment. Basically, the ranking signals were announced before the desktop update so SEOs had time to prepare. What is new, however, is that the factors now also apply to the desktop version.

Let’s therefore take a closer look at the New Factors:

  1. Core Web Vitals are roughly speaking three different metrics, Loading, Interactivity, Visual Stability, which all have the common goal to make the design of a website measurable. In this way, Google wants to check how good the user experience is.
  2. Protection against malware and spam: This point is not fundamentally new, but it is also part of the Page Experience Update. So, if you provide harmful downloads, misleading content or appear harmful for any other reason, you will be placed far behind.
  3. HTTPS usage on the whole site: If you still don’t use an SSL certificate for the whole website, you should change that now.
  4. Annoying popups and ads: Google has long had something against layers, ads and popups that block the view and thus make for a poor user experience. With the new update, there is no more room for this.
  5. Optimization for mobile devices: This point is also not fundamentally new. Nevertheless, you should optimize your website for mobile devices. However, this point no longer affects the ranking for computers.

The Google Search Central account stated that the update should be fully rolled out by the end of March. However, Google emphasizes that no drastic changes will be made as a result of the update, as there are still many more factors.
