In this video, we’ll take a look at what Google PageSpeed Insights is and what it’s used for:

Since 2018, the loading speed of a website has been one of the Google ranking factors. If the loading speed of a website is too slow in both desktop and mobile view, Google will penalize it in the ranking. However, the loading time of a website is also crucial for users. If a page takes too long to load, many users leave it again after a few seconds.
Google has developed PageSpeed Insights for exactly this purpose.

Side speed measurement

PageSpeed Insights is a Google tool that allows you to measure the loading time of a URL in both mobile and desktop versions. In addition, a score is calculated and the website is analyzed for potential improvements. Any URL can be entered and checked here.

Recourse to Chrome User Experience

For the analysis, the tool uses real user experiences from Chrome User Experience. This data comes from users who use Google Chrome as their browser and voluntarily share their usage statistics with Google. Data from Lighthouse is also used for the analysis. Lighthouse evaluates the performance, access and user-friendliness of a website.

Once the analysis is complete, a performance score is displayed on a scale of 0 to 100 to quickly and easily track the performance of a website. This is divided into three categories:

  • 100-90: fast, green is displayed as the color here.
  • 89-50: average, orange
  • 49-0: slow, red is displayed as the color here.

However, PageSpeed Insights provides more data than just this one performance value after the analysis is complete.
Below that, the First Contentful Paint (FCP) which indicates how long it takes for the first image or text of the website to be fully displayed.

The First Input Delay (FID), which measures the time from which a user can interact with the website for the first time. The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), which measures when the largest content item becomes visible in the viewport. And the Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), which measures the unexpected shift of page elements while the website is still loading. However, the performance value provides a reliable good overall view in just a few seconds.

Useful overview

The Google PageSpeed Insights tool helps you to get an overview of a URL and its loading time. By the way, this is not the only Google tool that analyzes the loading time of a URL. Other tools like webpagetest.org also show existing problems and offer possible solutions to further improve the performance of a URL.
