The history of the Internet begins in 1964 with the precursor of the Internet, which was called Arpanet and was not introduced to the public until 1969. At the time, four computers from four different universities were connected: Stanford, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City and Santa Barbara. The first successful data transmission also took place in the same year.

In this video we look at the history of the Internet and what is actually the difference between the World Wide Web and the Internet:

The concept of the WWW

The World Wide Web was invented by computer expert Tim Berners-Lee in 1990 and became available to everyone just three years later. The Internet and also the World Wide Web are colloquially used as synonyms, but actually refer to two different things. Let’s take a closer look at the difference: The worldwide network that connects computer networks is called the Internet. The Word Wide Web is actually just a service of the Internet through which web pages can be created and visited. In addition to the World Wide Web, there are other services on the Internet, such as e-mail or web radio.

Let’s now return to the history of the Internet:

In 1958, in the middle of the Cold War, the U.S. was looking for a way to control networks without satellites. For this reason, the Arpanet was developed. After that, however, development was slow, which is why 13 years later only 23 computers were connected to the Arpanet. But then computers from Norway, Hawaii and England were added, so that by 1983 up to 4,000 computers were connected.

A year later, the Domain Name System was developed, which allowed users to address computers by name instead of IP address.

Origins of servers and browsers

Then, in the late 1980s, Tim Berners-Lee developed the concept of the World Wide Web and invented the URL, web server and browser. In addition, he came up with the idea for HTTP and, related to that, setting web links. In 1990, the decision was made to open the Internet to the public. From this point on, everyone could use the Internet for themselves and the Arpanet was shut down a little later and replaced by the World Wide Web. Three years later, the first mass-market web browser was developed, and shortly thereafter the first search engines, such as Yahoo and Lycos, went online. The Google search engine went online in 1997. In the years that followed, the Internet became more and more popular and was pushed forward more and more, especially by social networks such as Facebook from 2004 onwards. Then, when the first iPhone was introduced in 2007, the Internet took another leap. However, the history of the Internet does not end there. So now virtual worlds on the Internet like the Metaverse are becoming more and more popular and companies like Meta are working hard to push this forward. So we’re still in the middle of the Internet story and excited to see how it evolves.
