Google Tag Manager was introduced by Google in October 2012 and is a free tag management system. This facilitates the implementation of web analytics tools such as Google Analytics but also other tools and scripts on a website. Especially for online marketers without programming skills, this is a great advantage, as the tools can thus be integrated without much IT knowledge.

In this video, we’ll take a look at what Google Tag Manager is and the benefits it offers:

A closer look at Google Tag Manager

When setting up web tracking, the required tracking code must usually be manually built into the respective subpages to be measured. This process is not only time-consuming, but also usually not feasible for many laymen. This is where Google Tag Manager comes in as a bridge, as it allows tracking to be integrated with just a single change to the source code. Page operators can then make changes later via Google Tag Manager, which will automatically take effect on the respective page without having to adjust the source code.

Interactions are recorded

The Google Tag Manager then records the interactions that are made on a website or in an app and sends this data on to the respective connected tools. However, with the Tag Manager itself, the evaluation of the data is not possible. The respective tool is used for this purpose. For the Google Tag Manager to work, the Tag Manager code only needs to be integrated once on a web page, as mentioned.

What exactly are the advantages of Tag Manager, we will show you now:

  1. The Google Tag Manager automatically checks whether new tags have been included correctly.
  2. The source code of a website becomes cleaner, especially when multiple tracking codes from different service providers are included. These can be replaced with a single Google Tag Manager code.
  3. The loading time of the website improves, as not every tracking code has to be loaded individually.
  4. Direct changes to the source code are no longer required.
  5. The use of the system is very user-friendly and easy to operate.
  6. More self-determined work for online marketing managers
  7. Less effort for IT
  8. Cost and time savings
