With Google Ads, successful ads can be placed and through various elements, they are displayed in a larger and more appealing way, displacing the competition. This effect also happens through Google Ads image extensions.

In this video we will introduce you to the Google Ads image extension and show you how to use it:

Google Ads image extensions allow you to add thematic images to the ad. These images are then played out for the top-ranking ad, adding a visual element to the text ads. Through these image expansions, ads automatically take up more space and are thus perceived more strongly by users, which in turn increases the click-through rate. The best part is that the image extensions do not cost extra.

Let’s take a closer look at the display format:

If your potential customers find your ad with the image extension in Google search results, they will see a

  • Ad title
  • of a descriptions
  • a URL
  • one picture
  • and additional extensions

Preferably, Google Ads with image extension are played out on mobile devices. And only if the ad is in one of the top three positions in the search results.

In order to use the Google Ad image extension, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a Google Ads account and active text ads
  • Your Google Ads account must be more than 90 days old
  • You must not have violated the Ads advertising guidelines in the past
  • and you may only promote products or services of a harmless category.

You can add the images to your ads directly in Google Ads or also in the Google Ads Editor on campaign or ad group level. Even if the route via the campaign level is faster, however, images have greater relevance per display group.

Formats of the image extensions

Now let’s take a look at the formats for the Ads image extensions, where Google is very strict and checks your images carefully. Basically, the images you want to use must not contain any text or logo overlay. In terms of format, they should be square or optionally 1.91:1 ratio. Also, do not use images that have a lot of blank space or do not show the product or service. In addition, of course, the quality must be good, so blurred or unrecognizable images may not be used here. The file format can be PNG, JPG or a static GIF, with a recommended pixel size of 1200×1200.

Several images are recommended

Lastly, it is recommended to use multiple images per image extension. This can be at least 3 to 20 images, because the algorithm uses the different images and plays the ones that perform best the most. As you can see, Google Ads image extension has only advantages and therefore you should definitely use it to improve your ads. The key here, as always, is to test different images.
