How to add Apple Pay in your Shopify Checkout

In this video we will show you how to add Apple Pay to Shopify, i.e. how to make Apple Pay available as a payment method in your checkout. Find out what Apple Pay is, where the advantages lie and what you need to bear in mind if you want to use this payment provider in the video.

Shopify Apple Pay - How to add it

You use Shopify and want to provide your customers with more than just PayPal as a payment provider. Then this article is just right for you.
We show you how to activate Apple Pay for your Shopify store. But first, let’s take a quick look at what’s actually behind Apple Pay.

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is a payment system from the U.S. company of the same name, which incidentally has been around since October 2014. The idea behind this is to use only one system for everything, and to make it as secure, privacy-oriented and uncomplicated as possible. This means you can use it to pay in stores, at Apple itself, but of course also online. In Germany, by the way, it has been possible to pay with it since 2018. Apple itself presents three arguments for Apple Pay on its website. When you set up Apple Pay, your credit card is deposited, but your personal information is obscured when you make a purchase, using a 16-digit pseudo-credit card number. This means that personal data remains protected. This means that no credit card data is stored on Apple’s servers. And especially in pandemic time, a powerful argument. You don’t have to touch cash or the keys of a debit card machine, which reduces the risk of picking up pathogens. These are compelling arguments for customers to opt for Apple Pay and therefore worth considering for you as a merchant. But let’s take a look at what you need for it.

Shopify Apple Pay - You must meet these requirements

First of all, you need to use one of these credit card payment providers. For our guide, we rely on Shopify Payments.
Your store must have an SSL certificate and it must comply with Apple’s proper use policy.
This would not include you if you sell tobacco products, THC products or vapes. The same applies to pornography, weapons, but also if your store could harm Apple’s image or in any way badmouth Market. If none of this applies to you, here’s what you do.

Shopify Apple Pay - The Guide

In your Shopify backend, go to the settings. There you go to the submenu “Payments”. I already told you that we decided to use “Shopify Payments”. However, if you prefer to use stripe or Braintree, you can find them under “Show all other providers”.
But now we click on “Activate Shopify Payments” and then in the next step we would enter our contact details, IBAN, etc. and we would have activated Shopify Payments, which would allow us to offer our customers a few more service providers in addition to Apple Pay. But to be on the safe side, click on Manage here and make sure that Apple Pay is checked.
If you do not want to offer one of the payment service providers included here, remove the checkmark and save. It’s that simple.

This is what you and your customers should consider

Note, however, that the security aspect promised by Apple Pay is also linked to an authentication process. That simply means you have to prove that you are you. That’s why Apple Pay is only displayed in the checkout if you access it with Safari on iOS or macOS devices. It must be at least an iPhone SE, 6, 6 Plus or newer, iPad Pro, Air 2, mini 3 or newer, or an Apple Watch or Macbook with Touch ID. If you have another MacBook Pro without Touch ID, it can also be used in combination with the devices mentioned above.

This is what you and your customers should consider
