You may wonder what exactly a cookie is and why you need a cookie banner at all. Cookies are data that are cached when you visit a website to improve the user experience. When a user views a web page, tiny amounts of information are downloaded to their device. This information may be performance, social media, content, or advertising cookies.
In this video, we’ll take a look at why you need a cookie banner for your Shopify store and how to create one:
The cookie banners are there to inform users about what information is being tracked and also to give a choice about how much to track.
Many users are bothered by the banner
However, many users find these cookie banners annoying. For store operators, however, cookie banners are a step towards a legally compliant store, because since December 2021, the Telecommunications Telemedia Data Protection Act (TTDSG for short) has summarized the various data protection regulations and adapted them to the cookie guidelines. This law specifies that the consent of website visitors is mandatory for the use of cookies. A cookie banner is therefore mandatory and must already be active as soon as a website goes live. Shopify stores do not include the cookie notice by default, so you should definitely include cookie banners in your store to make it legally compliant.
There are two possibilities for this:
- The first way is via a Shopify app or an all-in-one provider. We recommend the provider Cookiebot or the Shopify AppGDPR Legal Cookie.
- The second way is to copy the code to the right place. However, this will slightly change the template code, so we recommend the first way.

The design is customizable and the cookie banners can be configured individually. By the way, the app’s fees depend on your own Shopify plan.
