Enable new tip feature in Shopify store

Today we want to draw your attention to a Shopify feature that hasn’t been covered much yet, at least on YouTube.
We are talking about the digital tip. This is a construct that only really became public during the pandemic and enables customers to pay more for extraordinary performance in the form of tips and thus, for example, to pay more for the service they receive. Remuneration of suppliers. This function is already available, for example at leading food ordering sites such as Lieferando, Wolt or Uber Eats.

What you need to know about it
The Help Center indicates that the function should be used as follows. At the checkout itself on the payment page, a voluntary tip can still be performed in addition to the charges to be made. This can be determined in percentage or absolute terms. But even if you are not in the food sector, you can, for example. add another individual label. Before we show you how to enable this tip feature in Shopify, a few pointers from Shopify itself.
Should you as a customer choose the percentage method, i.e. for example. 10% tip want to give, it is yes relevant whether these are applied to the amount before or after the tax. Shopify’s answer here is that this is credited to the amount BEFORE tax. Credit card and transaction fees also apply to tips.
Generally, it is not possible to add a tip when the customer pays via ShopPay.
Less relevant for you will be the limit of $1000 maximum, but we note it here.

But now for the last question, how do you set this up in Shopify?
To do this, you need to go to the “Settings” in the backend and click on “Checkout and accounts”.
If you scroll down a bit you will find the section “Tip”. Check the box for “Show tip options at checkout” here. This would make the function active for the time being after saving. However, you can use the second checkmark to determine whether this function should be displayed to everyone or whether this function should only be visible after a checkbox has been activated. You can then specify three individual percentage options. By default, this would be 5, 10 and 15%.
How to change the label
If you want to change the label text for the online tip, you have to go into your theme script. So go to Themes, and select “Change language” as the action. Then select the “Checkout & System” submenu and pick this section, which you can then use to textually change the tip label.
