How to set up your tax rates on Shopify

Here’s how to set taxes in your Shopify store. We will show you how to access the tax settings, how to add a new country for which you can then store the general country tax, but also specific tax rates for certain product groups. All that in this screencast.

Today’s episode is about taxes, so right at the beginning again our note: We do not give tax or legal advice with this blog article, but only inform. Namely, we inform you about how to set your tax rates, for example. for different countries in your Shopify store. Under Settings, you can already see the button for Taxes. There we go up and notice that the UK and EU have already been integrated fiscally by default. If we now use e.g. want to integrate the tax rate for individual countries, we need to follow the link of the shipping profiles, then click on Manage Rates and we create a new shipping zone.

Practical example of control settings in Shopify

Let’s just take Switzerland as an example. So enter the respective name and pick out the desired country. Then click on“Done“. We will find the newly created country again if we scroll down a bit and we can add a shipping rate here. With this we have added Switzerland, now we want to set up the tax rate.

First save and return to the main control menu. Switzerland has now also been added as a tax country there and can be set up with the “Setup” button. The state tax is currently 7.7% as far as I know. At this point we would like to point out that we do not give any guarantee for tax matters. Please inform yourself again independently for the respective country. Furthermore, tax overrides can be added. Let’s do this for demonstration purposes for “Goods for daily use”. These would be taxed at 2.5% and can be created by pressing “Add a tax override”.

n order to be able to apply this tax rate to the respective category, however, you must have created it beforehand. If we go back to the main control menu – after we have saved the setup – we see that the status has been changed to “raise”. This process can of course be repeated for other countries.
